This is a portion of the statement that John Bolton made to the

We do not support measures that prohibit civilian possession of small arms. This is outside the mandate for this Conference set forth in UNGA Resolution 54/54V. We agree with the recommendation of the 1999 UN Panel of Governmental Experts that laws and procedures governing the possession of small arms by civilians are properly left to individual member states. The United States will not join consensus on a final document that contains measures abrogating the Constitutional right to bear arms. We request that Section II, para 20, which refers to restrictions on the civilian possession of arms to be eliminated from the Program of Action, and that other provisions which purport to require national regulation of the lawful possession of firearms such as Section II, paras 7 and 10 be modified to confine their reach to illicit international activities.

We do not support measures limiting trade in SA/LW solely to governments. This proposal, we believe, is both conceptually and practically flawed. It is so broad that in the absence of a clear definition of small arms and light weapons, it could be construed as outlawing legitimate international trade in all firearms. Violent non-state groups at whom this proposal is presumably aimed are unlikely to obtain arms through authorized channels. Many of them continue to receive arms despite being subject to legally-binding UNSC embargoes. Perhaps most important, this proposal would preclude assistance to an oppressed non-state group defending itself from a genocidal government. Distinctions between governments and non-governments are irrelevant in determining responsible and irresponsible end-users of arms.

Thank you for your years of service to this great country Mr. Ambassador. Your contributions to the cause of liberty will be remembered. America is a weaker nation without you representing us at the United Nations.

I can't say that I blame him for getting out at this point, but I shudder to think who they'll get to replace him.

Thanks to Bush-the-compromiser we no longer have a Bolton on our side.  Maybe the impeachment of Bush is not so bad after all.  Cheney has more balls.

How many nano-seconds will it take before an Impeachment of Cheney takes place after Bush is impeached???  Then we would have PELOSI (I believe?) but a Democrat nonetheless.

He was one of only a few politicans that seem to stick to what they beleived.  Dems called him brash, but I called him brave.

Funny how when the North Korea fiasco started, the media was saying how he was the right man for the job and how he should be confirmed for good, but now with this last election the dems have ran away from those statements.

Hope that "lesson" was worth it, you damned ignorant fools.

You might just pay for it with your own blood.

Yep.  Unfortunately, I think this man and GWB were the last gasps of sovereignty for our country.

Umm...how is it Bush's fault?  That makes absolutely zero sense.

It was Bolton's choice to resign, Bush was going to do all he could to keep him.

This nation will likely not ever realize exactly how good Bolton was and how much he did for our freedoms... In 2001 and this past summer, big UN meetings took place to discuss the impact of small arms and light weapons (SALW) on the world. Of course they were salivating at the chance to disarm the US... Bolton stood strong in the face of the opposition.

He was not afraid to point out things that were contradictory to what the United States stands for. Honestly many of the gun control measures are contradictory to what the United Nations stands for if you can believe that... part of the UN charter states that people have a right to freedom and a right to defend themselves... HMMMM this seems to contradict what the UN is doing, disarming free people and essentially declaring the only rightful weapons holders to be nations (who's doing the killing in the last few pogroms if not nations?)

It's funny when you think about it... I remember Bolton derogatorily being called a Maverick and "Brash"... When liberals are Mavericks, all they have to do is oppose Conservatives. When a Conservative is a Maverick, they oppose the world...

Thank you, Mr. Ambassador. You look like Captain Kangaroo but you have the heart of a lion.

And after reading "The Global War On Your Guns" I am more convinced than ever before of two things: 1: A nationwide gun ban is in our not-so-distant-future and 2: I am more resolute than ever before to not comply with one. Nothing good comes of disarmament and there are MANY examples of it in the book. I need to pick up a copy of my own (this one's my dad's).

Sorry for the long winded diatribe. I am 3/4 of the way through the book as of last night and this topic figures prominently in it.

Likely so he didn't get run out on a rail in disgrace once the Dems took over.

Just my humble opinion but I can't blame him. From a liberal/compromiser point of view he didn't play nice with others. From my POV he was an unsung hero for our rights.

He could have stayed, but he would not have been eligible for any salary.  With Satan now in control of the House and Senate, he had no possibility of being confirmed.  I can't blame him for not volunteering his time to an unappreciative government.

Those turn-coat pig Republicans had plenty of time to work on his conformation.

He resigned because he had no hope of getting appointed and his temporary term was up in January.

Lincoln Chaffe (liberal Republican and lost his election) is on the committee and vowed he would never let Bolton's appointment leave committee so in effect it could never be voted on by congress.
