Cats are good except some cats don't chase mice.  I've got a lazy cat.

Poison works but then you've got dead mice stinking up the house in places you can't get to.

I use traps.  Peanut butter is the best bait I've used.

I just found one I need to get rid of.

The last mouse I had didn't last long with a trap. I heard the thing go snap and made it there in time to see his little legs trying to run for a few seconds.

If you have a crawl space under the house, place a bait tray under there.  They will get their fill before ever coming in.  My old house was surrounded by cotton fields, so I felt your pain.

I use peanut butter too ... They love it... It is hard for them to get off the trigger..
I spend a few minutes with small needle nose pliers, and re-set the triggers to super sensitive ( so close that it is hard to gently lay the trap down without setting it off ). You may find your time " well spent " adjusting triggers.
The smaller the mouse, the harder it is to trap them.

If they get into my garage, I use decon, and a tiny dish (upside down base of a can ) of Prestone Antifreeze for an after dinner drink.

ETA: Those MRE peanut butter packs are convienent for reloads, you certainly DO NOT want to take a chance contaminating a jar of peanut butter.
