Anyone here do their own hiring or know the whole process of reference checking?

My main question is whether you disclose your company's name, or whether you just say, "Hi, we were put down as one of (applicant)'s references for a job opening here, could you tell me a little about them?"

Reason I'm asking is because my boyfriend and I were talking a while back about doing this for each other - calling around to see what our former employers would say; more importantly, to see if they would even remember us.

I'm also curious as to what sorts of questions prospective employers ask references.

So, if we were to do this, and the former employer asked, "What company are you with?" could you just tell them that you are not allowed to disclose that information or something?

Since I graduate college in a month and I'm already going crazy looking for work, any advice is appreciated.

Actually, in most cases, all they may say without opening themselves to litigation is whether or not they would rehire you.  Literally.  When I check a refrence, that is all I ask, would you rehire them.  That's all they're gonna say, too.
