Explain the use of this to me, why "type" it out when its quicker to call, unpless your slacking at work.

I know someone who does text messages while driving, now thats safe.

I know it's very popular in Europe, because it is cheaper than a phone call.

I suppose it's also more useful for cheating on tests, and for sending quick messages like "meet me at 6:00" or "i'm going to be late" or stuff like that, so that you don't have to waste time talking to someone.

I've never used it myself, so I'm really not sure.

Sometimes you can't call someone but you can text them.

Sometimes I don't necessary want to talk to the person because I know their will be a long drawn out conversation so I send them a text message. voila! I dont have to talk to them

Sometimes it isn't quicker... or you're in a class/meeting/church or somewhere where it'd be innapropriate to call someone.  And even if it's convenient for you, it might not be for them... sometimes all it takes is a simple message, like, "traffic, 15 minutes late" or something.

I've blocked text messages, because it costs me $.10 to recieve and $.20 to send, or maybe it's the other way around.

I only do it to see if someone is at work/class, otherwise I call.

I blocked mine to since I got junk messages.

Its about cheaper to call here then text

Plus some of us, like myself, don’t have txt message plans associated with our cells and thus when people feel the need text message me, it drives up my monthly cell phone bill. Yeah its cheaper and faster to just call.

I "had" a friend who would text message you from the other room.

Ya, I hate when people text me to my personal phone.  When I had a blackberry from work, it's was alright because it was made for it.  But my old fashioned flip phone wasn't.  It takes me 3 minutes to check it and it's always my same friend and it's something important like "what's up"?

I need to have my provider turn it off....

My girlfriend and I use it fairly often.  It is usually for when a short message will suffice or when it is socially inappropriate for the other party to receive a call.  It is also good for sending naughty pictures.

[#11]
When you call someone you HAVE to talk to them. When you text someone you dont.

Thats why I do it.

I just go to their providers website and send it.

it costs me 5 cents to text message someone

it costs me 25 cents per minute to call someone

for quick messages......its cheaper

I've received 2 junk text messages since I've owned this phone and boy do I think these bastards should be killed. (Is that a CoC violation? Kill all the text marketers? Well theese guys are scum they waste more than my time......they waste my money too!)

Not sure if it still works, but if you type +1 and the number as a receiver for an instant message of AIM (AOL instant messenger), i.e. +19998675309, and your message as the text, it'll send it to the person's phone.

Why call, why message?  I don't understand.  I just wait until I meet the person.  Often, any problem has already resolved itself before I need to contact them.

You can tell I don't have, nor want a cell phone.

I "text message" from my phone all the time, via SMS (running late - ETA 1 hour), MMS (quick snapshots of work  progress direct to clients' phone), or email (I've almost given up my laptop).

The others are correct, it's quicker - especially when it is a short message, and you'd rather not spend 10 minutes on the phone talking about the weather.

FWIW, a full qwerty keyboard and HS data transmission on the phone helps immensely in the time management area.

I hate text messages because I have to pay whether I want to read the message or not. i NEVER reply to them, except to tell someone to quit friggin texting me. I do that in person, and in an angry voice.

Text messenging can be more efficient than calling/speaking.

#1 I don't have to wait for someone to answer.
#2 They can respond/answer on their time.
#3 I don't have to wait through 4-6 rings + voicemail greeting to leave someone a message.

When I'm chasing planes I can't always call my wife & tell her I landed ok... or that my flight is late.  When she's @ work she can't take a call.

I can (and do) text her and she'll get to it when she can.

Same for her...  she'll drop me a message while I'm flying (phone off) and I get it whenever I land.

They're great for non-urgent FYI type of messages.

Man, why do you have to talk about my GF like that?
11/9/2006 12:35:20 PM EDT
[#48]
I use text messages pretty often... used to more with the previous girlfriend.  It was easy when I was at work, as I work on the phone.

It's great for short informational things you need to communicate, but don't want to call, wait for the other person to pick up, exchange pleasantries, get distracted by whatever other BS they want to talk about..... etc etc... or waiting for the BEEP so you can leave a VM.   (that annoys the fuck out of me!  Listen to the person's greeting, then listen to the voice tell me how to leave a message, and that I can hang up when I'm done.  NO FUCKING SHIT!! JUST BEEP ALREADY!!!)

With the womminz, they like text messages, because it leaves a lot to their imagination, leaves them hanging and wanting more... I've used it quite effectively to get the last girlfriend worked up!

And it is nice having a QWERTY keyboard... I just switched to a T-mo MDA.  I can also send and receive emails from my Gmail account, and receive from my Road Runner POP3 accounts... it's uber handy.

So text messages have their place, but it's not a good thing to actually have a 'conversation' that way.

The only time any of my friends use text messages is to invite everybody to thier house at one time...     "fire @ my house, 6:00" or something like that.

Other than that I never use them.
