Last Monday while doing Seated Rows in weights class my lower back started to hurt. My self-diagnosis is a "pinched nerve", whatever the hell that is. The pain was bad at first, and until Wednsday it was hard to walk, but that pain has mostly gone away. But it still hurts like hell to go from horizontal in the bed at to vertical standing in the morning...takes me a few minutes to work up the courage, and get into a position that will minimize the pain during the transition. Is there anything I can do to speed the recovery process? |
| sounds like siatica (question spelling) it's the nerve that runs from your lower back, down your leg. I hurt mine lifting a patient, and since it has been easy to aggravate. There isn't alot you can do, besides excersise, and anti inflamitory meds. It takes mine about 2 weeks to get over. The night I hurt mine, my Dad was in from out of town, had he not been there, I think I would have laid in bed and pissed on myself, it hurt that bad getting up. He had to bear hug me and partially lift me out of the bed. Best of luck. |

Lay on your back with arms spread wide. Roll your right hip to the left with the right leg extended 90 degrees to your body. Try to relax the lower back area enough to get that satisfying "pop". Do the other side just opposite. Hold the extended position for several seconds ans about 5 sets. Lay on your stomach and raise your upper body onto your elbows while keeping the pelvis flat on the bed. Hold this position for about 30 seconds. Do this 5 times. Laying flat on your back, pull your right knee up as far as you can towards your chest and hold it there for about 30 seconds. Same with the left. Again, 5 sets. My doctors and surgeons all said that I should never do situps and crunches, ever again. BTDT |

Ice, heat, stretch, repeat. 600mg ibuprofen with every meal. Get the swelling down and you'll have a better idea of exactly what's injured. Did you feel something slip in your spine? or did you feel a muscle go? If you felt it in the spine and now you've got a nerve pinched see a chiropractor, sooner the better, if it's a muscle see my advice above and add massage when you've got the swelling under control and can tolerate it. Keep in mind if it is a pinched nerve it'll cause tension and pain in the muscles that nerve serves. Good luck, I've been there and it really sucks. |

Chiropracter is what I would try. It's possible that you pulled one of your discs out of alignment and that is inflaming the nerve and all the muscles around it. I would go with the motrin idea to get the swelling/inflamation to calm down. Then get an adjustment from a chiro. I've had occasions where I couldn't even stand up straight walking into the doc, he adjusts me and inside of a few hours I'm good to go. Good luck with whatever you do, I know back pain sucks |
+1 i had that happen to me in the Marine Corps, dam docs wanted to cut me open, i settled for chiropracter had to pay for it myself, what i did learn was that you need to go asap before your muscles get muscle memory and if it is a slipped disk it will keep slipping on its own and more trips to chiro and more money, it took me like 10 sessions twice a week until it got better. |

Ice first, until the area is numb, then 30 minutes later do toe-touches in a hot shower, if you can do that without risking a fall. |

Odds are you will have problems from now on. It may take some time to heal (think weeks not days). If you are over weight, loose it. That will help. Strengthing the muscles helps some people, doesn't help others. Learn to let other people do the heavy lifting. Your back just gave you a warning. Next time you may be left all but paralyzed for a week or more. |
