Starlings, that is.

I don't go in for torturing animals, but starlings are a nuisance species that were dumped into the U.S. by some moronic Shakespeare lover (not kidding, look up the history) before people understood what devastation exotic species could wreck on native species.  The starling is competing with and wiping out our native bluebirds and purple martins.  Destroying all the starlings (just as, sadly, we did to the passenger pigeons a century ago) would actually be a good thing.

I saw a huge flock of the damn things whiel driving back from KCR yesterday.  After a morning of watching flamethrowers and machine guns, I was thinking.  How sensitive are birds eyes to light?  Any particular frequency more sensitive?

Could one of the new battlefield blinding lasers (like the Chinese are fielding) be used to burn the little fuckers' eyes out while they're flocking?

Meanwhile, I am thinking of setting up a radio-controlled BB gun on my deck and spreading cat food around.  I should be able to get a few every day.  Every little bit helps.

Yup.

Some idiot thought that North America should have every bird mentioned in W.S. works.

Starlings are evil little fuckers.

And weired, too:  See this video:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfkexGdmmQk

ETA:  Here's one that mimics pretty well www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcRfBU59LhM

My dad has an orchard and we have killed thousands  (a couple of years ago he caught over 800 in one summer) of starlings using a trap similar to this:

His doesn't have the catch box or baffle, typically we just put the dogs in there and they take care of the starlings (and sometimes magpies),  otherwise you just go in and grab them and kill them with your hands.  A .22 bird shot doesn't tear up the chicken wire, but a .45 Auto does.

Edit for spelling and to add

We bait it with apples and/or dog food.  Also I agree that starlings are a huge pest and should be erradicated.

WOW just WOW!  Birds check in, but they don't check out!

That's pretty neat.  Also pretty big, what, around six feet by eight feet?

My son and I have played sniper this summer, taking out about 40-50 of the damn things with the air rifle.  I hate those things!  Like you said, they play Hell on the bluebird population.

As a supervisor at Frito-Lay's largest plant (Indiana), it was my responsibility to wield the dreaded Cosssman pellet gun to repel the hordes of invading starlings.  They loved to congregate to the waste chip bin, especially in the winter.

On one day, I killed over 40 of the buggers.

One particularly funny kill was a wing shot, where the starling fell and began running along the back wall.  It saw one of those large steel rat traps and ran straight for the hole.  It got its head inside the hole and the door slid shut, snapping it's neck.

Red Winged Blackbirds are lumped in with Starlings as "nuisance" birds but damn, they look so much cooler.

I think I should be offended at this thread because you just advocated the extinction of an entire race of birds! I just pray the birds you speak of aren't all the same color, the PC police here will have a 4 minute long collective orgasm.

Maybe XD can confirm.
