Edit: Another thing to try.

Right click an empty area of your Desktop
Select Properties
Select the Appearance tab
Choose the Advanced button
In the "Item:" drop down menu, click the entry titled 'Icon'
Using the up or down arrows, change the number displayed
Click OK
Using the above instructions, change the value of step #6 back to its original position.

TweakUI used to have a "Restore Icons" command. Try that.

what happens when you try to open one of the programs?  '

do they open or does nothing happen

i've seen this happen on several machines where norton was installed on a system and it screwed up windoz.   a fresh install was the only way i could fix it

Well it just mysteriously came back up...

But anyways thanks for your help... I'll come back screaming when it mysteriously gets rid of my icons again.

And to answer some off your questions:

the icons 'do' exactly what they should, they just didn't display with the proper graphic.

I'm running mcaffee security suite (firewall and anti virus), with auto up dates, and spybot search and destroy as well.

These weird little gliches almost make me wish I used macs
