At another Forum I belong to a guy claims the following.

Sure, just not the rabbit he was aiming at. "Still 4400"? I think the muzzle velocity is 2550 fps or so, and after 150 or 200 yards, the drop gets pretty bad. No doubt he'll tell you they were "wildcat handloads", so you should ask him what kind of primers and powder his friend was using |
|
ah.. ah... what about elephants.. at 1500 yards.. you take down an elephant at 1500 yards with a .17hmr i wanna be there.... you did say 'ANY ANIMAL YOU SHOULD ENCOUNTER'.. what about whales.. sheese what about tyranosaurs? |
|
Bullberry Maybe he ment 150 yards? However, the muzzle velocity is only about 2500 fps... |
I think you hit it right on the head. It was probably the .17-110 Sharps load (.17 cal. bullet seated atop a 110 gr. charge of of ffffg black powder). MV = 8763 fps. That round could do the job. |
your kidding right? how long of a barrel would you need for black powder to push the bullet that fast? seems possible but the barrel would have to be something like 70 inches and the bullet would probably disintegrate in flight at that speed anyway. |
yes he is kidding expanding gas itself is not tjhat fast |
Pffffffft! Todd Bailey makes a .17-110 Sharps with a 91" bbl as a factory option. That rifle will milk the round for all it's worth. You can get it built on a semiauto MP5 platform for an extra $300. Money well spent, if you ask me. Rabbits travel in packs. Like wolves. ETA: The bullets are Rhodium-cored sintered bronze. Hand cast and then Dremeled to fit the rifle from which they are to be fired. |

Shoot, that's nothin'. Tonight I shot 98 out 100 clay targets on a Sporting Clays range with a .17 HMR. The closest target was a 300 yard hard crosser, shot with the gun upside down, using a dental mirror to aim through the 24X BSA target scope while one of the gals on the squad distracted us with funny stories and neck rubs. I almost forgot, I was riding a mean horse, never broke to gunfire before tonight. The dogs did a pretty good job keeping him in line until the wimminz started taking their clothes off - scared 'em off or something. |
