Who here does it? I just got a new GPS unit with the intention of getting into geocaching. I've been a couple of times and it's a lot of fun... and FREE. For those who don't know: www.geocaching.com/faq/ |
I'm a geek Found about 140, placed 6. Geocached in about 5 states and 3 countries. Makes for some great hikes. Kids have a great time and I enjoy it too. Can make a day trip out of it if you search an area on Geocaching.com and pick 10 or so caches. Print them out, enter the coords, and have fun. I like the multi-waypoint caches involving a little work. This sport (?) gets you out to places and lets you see things you may have not noticed before. Plus, it makes you really proficient with your GPS so when you're out hunting/hiking you can rely on your GPS skills....In addition to that map and compass you DO have in your pack... |
| I did it for a couple of years (177 finds as screen name Matt1344). The summer heat, ticks and poison ivy eventually drove me away from it. It is a great fall and winter activity, though. Also, I got pretty bored with a lot of the hides and frustrated with the poor quality of the contents of the caches -- it's rare when you find a cacher who employs much creativity in his/her hides or caches. Still, it's a lot of fun. It's a great family activity and a good way to get familiar with your GPS. |

Done it, like it, have not done it in a long time due to time. Portland area has some REAL unique caches. When I worked downtown I made a cache that sent the geocacher to a park monument that had the bill of rights on it. Once at the plaque the geocacher has to use the 2nd amendment as a "key" to solve for the final coordinates. |
