My garbage disposal is not working. It makes a humming sound but will not run. The reset button has been pressed a bunch of times. The blades appear to spin freely and I don't think it's jammed. Any ideas? I've replaced them before but it's not that old and don't want to spend the money if the hive mind has a suggestion that would get it running. It's really hard to fit my big ol hand down in there.I'm going to clean my SKS now and will check back in a few. On a side note I'm always a little nervous with my hand down in the disposal. Anyone see maximum overdrive!!!

There should be a hole on the bottom that you can put an Allen wrench into. Turn it back and forth a few time and see if it runs then.

Last time we had a disposal issue at work reset button wouldnt do it and the blades were free from obstruction.

Ensure power is off to the disposal.  At the bottom of the disposal there will be a spot to insert an allen wrench.  Put the right size one in there and try to turn the wrench.

The socket is connected to the same shaft as the motor and the blades.  If it spins freely then we'll get back to work, if it's bound up try turning it both ways to free whatever is jammed.

Better yet: get rid of it, put in a regular drain instead.

In-sink home disposals are a mess, they serve no great purpose (it's about as easy to just peel vegetables into the regular trash can) and they grow mildew. Anything that kills the mildew will tend to weaken the disposal's seals as well. Just like wall-to-wall carpeting, they became popular by being marketed as "luxury" items but in reality they cause more problems than they solve.
