I had a cell phone that my wife and daughters got me as part of thier package deal.  Never used it much, so now my youngest daughter has "procured" it from me (permanently).  I'd like a cell phone for emergency and pre-SHTF type use and to have on me if I have to go investigate a "bump in the night".  I've heard of these prepaid cell phones, but don't know anything about that.  If Islamo facists can have them why can't I?   Mostly I want cheap, but still reliable for infrequent use.  What do you recommend?

Go to wal-mart and buy a pre-paid cell.  Then don't use it unless it is an emergency

I have a Cingluar "Go Phone". I charge it with $25 per quarter. And use about $5 per month of usage. It's a great phone that works well.

buy one of the refurb units from Cingular online.

the phone is about 30 buxx, and your roll-over minutes make it a good deal.

prepay for a back-up phone is a good idea, and because Cingular allows your minutes to foll-over (anywhere from 90 days to 1 year depending on amount purchased) you don't need to worry about a monthly bill.

Can you guys list the total cost along with an idea of what you get for that (eg includes phone, etc).  I really have no idea how much these things cost.

My dear old Mom (77 yrs) would like an emergency type cell phone too.

That is what I have. Although, mine was not a refirb. I get full cell usage, voice mail, pages, etc. I only get charged for usage. Balances roll over if you recharge per quarter at $25. I currently have a balance of $47.

Google is easy to use, or you could just go to the Cingular website and check out their offers.

Basic refurb phone w/charger is about $30, and you can buy $25 worth of minutes which will last for 3 months. You can buy newer and more features in the phone but the cost goes up, and if you want a $300 camera phone with MP3 player, interenet, email, etc., they got 'em too.

But only one.
Buying 600 of them for "commercial purposes" might attract unwanted attention.
Yep, no terrorists here.

I pay the Cingular bill now, and can use Google thank you.  If you don't like my asking, go away.  I find most things associated with cell phones quite annoying.  What irks me is the hidden costs.  My daughter and wife told me they'd signed up to a Cingular deal for $80/mo total for three phones.   The bill is about $120/mo.  The extra is just in taxes and hidden fees.  This is why I want to know the real bottom line.

A cheap prepaid phone is the way to go as others have noted.  However any phone is required to allow a 911 call through even if you don't have service.

I've been using Tracfone for years. Get the 1 year service and you'll be happy as a pig in ....poop. Check their website though to make sure coverage is good in your area.
