I have a problem connecting 3 computers to the internet, allow me to explain:

In my household, there are 4 computers connected to the internet at any various point in time. 3 of the 4 are Gateway computers, and 1 is a custom built desktop (the one I'm typing from obviously).

The other day, there was a storm nearby and the power went out. When the power came back on, ALL 3 gateway computers couldn't connect to the internet, but my custom built desktop could.

I have tried connecting all 3 gateway computers to the network cable that I'm currently on right now, and none of them worked. I went out and bought a new network card for my sister's computer and installed it, and it still won't work... I tried plugging the computers directly into the cable modem with a brand new network cord that came with the new network card, and still yet, no luck.

The EXACT same problem occurs on all 3 computers, it'll show a picture of two computers trying to connect to each other on the bottom right hand corner of the toolbar, and then it'll say "Limited or no connectivity".

The network card that I bought for my sister's computer is the exact same one that I have in my custom built computer right now........ My computer stays connected and "on" 24/7..... And it was on when the storm hit and power went out.

It's not the network cords, it's not the router, it's not the cable modem, and it's not the network cards themselves... All 3 gateway computers have the exact same error message, and yet the custom built computer is fine.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? I don't know what to do.

If I don't have any luck here, I'll sleep on it and try to get in contact with Gateway Tech Support tomorrow, because I'm way too tired to listen to some nerd trying to talk to me like I'm an infant that doesn't even know where the power button is.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

For some reason they are not getting DHCP leases. Strange indeed.

try different cables sometimes they crap out.

Also calling GAteway will be a waste of time. your issue is not theirs and they will not suport it. They dont support networking and if you mention lightning, its over. At best they can walk you through troubleshooting teh NIC in them but thats it.

plug one of the gateway systems into the same port on the router that the custom system is working on

I've done that. I've plugged the cable I'm on into all 3 gateways, and no avail.

I don't know what DHCP leases are.

I just know how to put computer's together and to vaguely make them run, other than that... I'm lol

Any ideas on how to make the "DHCP leases" work right?

Shut everything down and light them back up in this order

1.Cable modem (wait one minute)

2. Router (wait one minute again)

3. Custom built desktop (yeah you guessed it)

4. The other 3 one at a time.

Well, all 3 computers are still under warranty.

I have no other idea of what to do... It obviously isn't the cable company's problem, because I'm still connected with my custom built computer.

your router needs rebooting. Unplug it. wait 1 minute. plug it back in. Reboot all PC's after.

Did lightning strike the house?

Maybe the motherboards went.  When the motherboard went on my old pc, most everything worked except the PCI slots.

One test to try is to manually configure the IP addresses to unused addresses on your local network and manually enter the DNS information.  You can get that from the router info page.  If that doesn't work then you know it's the hardware.

Go to all four systems and open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" and compare the results to the other systems.  You should be using DHCP to get IP DNS and IP Gateway addresses.  Report back the results.

First run winsock fix. www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html . then run your network setup wizard. mmk

Yep, that's exactly what I did...

I JUST now got back online.

Everything's fixed... Just took a lil bit of elbow grease and some physical beating with electronics to fix it... but everything works now!

Thanks for all of the advice guys!

Ok, so I lied.

My desktop computer, and my laptop are running just fine again...

But I can't get the other 2 gateways online.

I'm at my wit's end and I don't know what else to do.

Post in your Home Town Forum with your city and ask if there are any network folks nearby.

If someone close to me had this issue, I'd pop over in the evening and fix it for 'em.  And find a new shooting buddy at the same time.

have you replaced equipment or what have you done?
