I am planning on joining the Army, but was thinking.....

Whats the max age to join the Marines?

I would rather be a Marine, but I think I am too old.

And no I havent called a Marine recruiter, guess I will do that in the A.M.

Thanks

I think it's like 28 or 29?  Not 100% on that because it might have changed.

That's what I was afraid of.  Guess I could call and ask anyhow.

It wouldn't hurt.......I think it'd be worth the time you'd be out, if you are serious about it.

We in 2002 had a guy in boot camp who it was his first enlistment and he was 30 or 31 years old. Call and ask

Follow through with your plan.  The Marines cannot offer you near the number of opportunities that the Army can.  The Marines are part of the Department of the Navy, thus they are dependant on the Navy for funding.  As a result, the Marines often have to make do with less.

The Army on the other hand is the largest branch, and currently receives the most money (thanks to the GWOT).  There are more MOSs in the Army, more duty stations, more opportunities . . . .

Don't turn this into a pissing contest.........people that join the Marines don't do it for the opportunities, benefits, or gear........they do it because they want to earn the title of "Marine" and the respect that goes with it.

Boot camp '89, I think we had two dudes that were in their early 30's. Both had waivers IIRC.

A good recruiter can get a waiver for anything.

Statutorially 35, however normally try not to take anyone over 27.  Most RS will require passing with a high score on a full PFT, vice the 1/2 distance IST for a some under 28.

Just join the Infantry in the Army and you'll be just as "badass" as the Marines...whether they care to admit it or not :)

It's all basically the same stuff just different heritage and a SLIGHTLY differnent way of doing some of the things when it comes down to the specifics.

If you're in the Infantry in the Marines or Army for instance you will be doing basically the same things...using most of the same weapons, etc.

IMO the Army just gets a bad wrap because of all the pogues they are required to have...the Marines hide a lot of theirs in the Navy.  The Infantry within the Army is a totally different world...

ETA I've got a couple of guys in my platoon that are former or current Marines ---WHATEVER, but they said they joined the Army to escape all the bullshit and just found different types of bullshit.   They were Infantry in the Marines aswell.

Well Travis, you can read, write, and form complete sentences.  That disqualifies you for the Marines.

Okay seriously, call the recruiter and find out what they can do for you.  I was Army, but one thing I do admire about the Marines is their abundance of pride and comradery(sp?).  Even when they were dead ass wrong they wouldn't admit it and would back each other up.  I always thought that was cool and you don't see it as much in the Army in my opinion.

Good luck and if you do go in....thanks for serving.

We had a 31 year old in our platoon heading to the reserves.  I think thats the only reason he got a waiver to go...  Ask a recruiter, he'll let you know...

Thats exactly why I want to be a Marine.

I called a recruiter, he didn't/wouldn't say what the max age was but after three or four questions stated I was too old!

Army here I come, as I said before, I would love to be a Marine, but am proud to be a soldier.

What you are doing is still good, and is better than those who could but do not.

You need to GO to a recruiter and sit down with them one-on-one.  If you're a quality person and the recruiter feels you would make a good Marine despite being slightly over the age limit, then he will go out of his way to get you a waiver.

Don't just give up because one recruiter said no over the phone, when countless others before you whom were older than you were able to make it.
