I have HDTV on satelitte and really do like it. I wish there were more channnels right now, but this really is where TV is headed. Do you have HDTV? Do you know of any HDTV DVR's? Let me rephrase that...any HDTV DVR's that are'nt extremely expensive? We have TIVO hooked to our regular satelitte and TIVO is the bomb for sure, but it won't record HDTV. |
We have Direct TV and they said a few months back that they had issues with the HDTV DVR. They said that there should be something out in "a few months". Still nothing. I looked on Best Buys site and they don't have one either. I sure would like to record some HDTV. |
Switch to Dish. They have the HD DVR now and they offer more HD channels. |
DTV's HD-DVR should be out within a few weeks. The manufacturer's samples had some problems, forcing some redesign work that has delayed roll-out. The problems have been ironed out, and production is ramping up. This thing is gonna be big. -Troy P.S., I co-own a DirecTV sales & installation company. |
Dish offers many more HDTV channels than anyone else. 3 to 5 times more than anybody else. |
Yeah i looked at their HD channels and to be honest I've not heard of 3/4 of them. |
When you say "Big" do you mean that the DVR is gonna be big or is Direct TV gonna roll out more channels to coincide with the DVR roll out? Inquiring minds want to know. |
And if you throw the channels you have not heard of DISH still has more than anyone else. If you want HDTV programming DISH is by far the best choice. |
I mean there are a ton of people waiting to upgrade, either from non-DVR HD receivers, older non-MPEG4 HD DVRs, or from standard-def DVRs. People ask us about them every day. DirecTV has several new satellites up in the air with a TON of capacity. We're talking 128 transponders of MPEG4 capability, and currently only 4 transponders are in use. Each transponder can handle 4-5 HD channels. The big problem is that most of the programming people actually watch isn't shot or broadcast in HD yet. Sure, there are the networks, who broadcast 2-4 hours of HD shows per day (not counting news), and a few speciality channels, but the vast, vast majority of TV is still broadcast in SD. That's going to be changing in a big way as we approach the Feb 2009 cut-off of analog broadcasting. The networks are gearing up for the biggest change in TV in 60+ years, but we aren't quite there yet. -Troy |

If your contract is up, switch to dish before shelling out for an HD DVR. The Dish 622 twin- tuner HD DVR is a great unit. Dish really does have the best HD programming, I'd like to see the bandwidth they have utilized a bit better, but some of those channels you've never heard of are quite good, or at least play cool stuff occasionally. HDnet, HDnet movies, UHD, and HBOHD are must haves. |

I needed a tv to put in my oldest sons bedroom so I purchased a Samsung 30" slimfit HD for the masterbedroom and gave our old tv to him. Ill tell you what, HDTV is to tv what CDs are to cassetts. Once you watch you wont want to go back. I want so bad to go to Dish network for their Gold HD package but their HD-DVR converter has only one HD tuner, the other is SD. MY cable companys HD-DVR has two HD tuners so I can recorde two HD shows while watching another. Once Dish gets some newer HD-DVRs out that are as good as my cable companies Ill be switching very fast. BKVic |
I agree! I've been a Dish customer since they went bright in 1996 and I've been getting HD programming now for almost two years now. Started HD with a Dish 921 DVR, a lot of people complained about problems with this unit but it worked flawlessly for me for a year until I bought my VIP622 - the 622 is a great unit. Right now Dish does have a lot more HD content broadcast than any other provider out there, I also agree that I wish they'd use the bandwidth a little better but I'm not complaining to much. I'm quite sure that Direct will eventually catch up but they are losing a lot of HD customers right now due to lack of HD content. I am interested in finding out how this Dish vs TIVO lawsuit works out - I'd hate to lose my Dish DVR..... |

Bumping since I'm a HDTV junkie. I have cable TV, and get like 12 HDTV channels. I would consider adding a dish if the HD content gave me more than I have now. The main channels I watch are INHD, INHD2, Discovery HD, and the wife likes Nascar on either TNTHD or local HD channel rebroadcast. We also get 1 HBO, and 1 Showtime HD channel. There is some other crap, but its basically just crap. Get Out and DEADLINE are our favorite shows, and ANYTHING travel. Is the Dish Network really worth moving to? How many HDTV channels do they offer? What would a years subscription cost for primarily HD channels? Would there be much that I don't aleady get? I find HD content to be less violent, more interesting, and of course awesome to watch over standard TV of any type. My HDTV is Pioneers best 50" Plasma with built in digital tuner, so I have tons of inputs, and I run TIVO too off the cable companies digital converter box. I have that card the cable company installed into my HDTV digital converter box. Would that cause a problem with Dish because there is already a card installed? Horray HDTV!! |
