ok, for those of you in states that allow you to have a concealed carry permit...

i have one in Minnesota, and by law there is no difference in the rules as far as i was
"edumocated" by my CCW instructor between open and concealed carry.

basically, i can drive down the road with my M1A on my front seat, or an AR15 on the dashboard.  supposedly.

im damn near tempted to try this out, cause ive been really bored lately and i dont have any draw down on dogs / gangbanger stories

anyone here ever gone for a cruise doing this just to see what happens?

if i had some spare time to get pulled over, drawn down on, searched ETC id do this and post results afterwards... if i didnt get shot in the process.

any stories to share?

In VA, we have concealed handgun permits, not concealed weapons permits, so the you can carry an UZI pistol under your coat, but not a knife.

Rifle laws in VA are unfortunately governed by hunting regs.  You are assumed to be hunting if you have a loaded rifle in the car.  VERY BAD VIBES...

So what you would like to do is drive around looking for trouble or negative attention?

Who was your instructor?  It seems to me they skipped some important parts of the class.

I'll try to help you out here....

The single most important part of self-defense is avoiding conflict in the first place.  Self-defense is for when you have run out of options, your back is against the wall, and if you don't act you or someone else is about to die.

You might want to review the four elements of legal self-defense in Minnesota, most notably the "Reluctant Participant".  Driving around looking for trouble (and posting about your plans to do so on an Internet message board) is not a good idea.

this is one of those "hypothetically speaking" types of deals, i dont know if you noticed any of my sarcasm?  this post wasnt meant to be taken too seriously, but i thought some interesting viewpoints/ stories might emerge from it.

Sarcasm does not translate well to the written word.

Forgive me if I don't think this sort of thing is funny - I worked very hard over an 8 year period to get "shall issue" passed in Minnesota, and I am continuing to work hard to keep it law here, having survived a repeal and re-passage.

As a carry permit holder, like it or not, you are an "ambassador" of the other 30,000 permit holders in this state, and an ambassador of the carry law itself.  Other people (the blaine shooting, the Ourada murder) have brought negative light on CCW in Minnesota.

I guess I don't think it's a joking matter.

While there are no laws that forbid open carry where I am, it is socially verboten. When I am out in the more rural areas, its no big deal...the sight of weapons is fairly common. When I go hiking / camping I generally opoen carry my sidearm in a belt holster. In and around town however I conceal.

The most important weapon in my arsenal is situational awareness, followed immediately by conflict avoidance techniques. My weapon is a distant third in rank of importance. Looking to toe the line seems somewhat contrary to a preparedness mentality. Testing a situation is one thing, but unless I am in an environment where it is locally socially acceptable, I conceal.

I see your point.

BTW putting an AR on the dash is simply trolling for trouble, and while I have done that over the years, I am hesitant to do so these days as the price of legal aid has gone through the roof.

Yeah, VAs concealed carry law is a little ass backwards. They trust us with a concealed handgun and hi-cap magainze but appearently the serfs are not trustworthy enough to conceal carry a knife or a ASP baton. It wasn't always like that.

As for assumed to be hunting if you have a loaded rifle in the car.
Be very very quite. I'm hunting zombies, vampires, and islamists
I just need some sliver tipped 5.56mm dipped in pigs blood to prove it.

Let me start by saying that PA is open carry state.

I work in a mall OUTSIDE THE CITY, last week there was a cop event in the mall so I walk over to chit chat, I was speaking to an Officer in the crime prevention department. So i ask him if he sees a lot of open carry in PA to my amazement he states that PA is NOT open carry state and if he sees a person with a gun on them they will be face down and handcuffed before he asks them any questions.

I was Shocked! what the hell cops don't know their own states law.

So I’m thinking: if I open carry one day in pa and I get attacked by the P O L I C E can I sue them?

You can keep a loaded handgun in your car here. No permit needed. Even Cali residents can do that when they are here. "Equal protection of the laws."

But rifles in vehicles must be unloaded due to hunting laws. Unloaded means no round in the chamber-loaded magazine in the rifle is OK.

I think the Minnesota DNR might object to you carrying a uncased rifle in your car/truck. God Himself wont even be able to help you if it is loaded,re-read the laws.

As far as open carry goes, I wouldn't suggest it in the TC-Metro area. way out-state might be a different story

Somehow, trying to attract attention from the local authorities sounds like a bad idea to me, legal or not.

I see it all the time here, even though we have CCW
I have never seen anyone carry a long gun though, I think that would raise some eyebrows

VA is an open carry state, and we have a large # of people who open carry

Not recommended. They'll get you for some crap like brandishing, or criminal threatening, or public disturbance, etc.

We had a guy around here who took off his coat in a Barnes & Noble and went from concealed to open. He didn't break a single law and ultimately never was charged with anything, however the resulting shit storm was less than amusing for him, to say the least.

If you want to "make a statement", good luck!

This guy may or may not have gone about this innocently to start with, but he sure continued stirring that pot after the fact. Since the originator of this thread might be considering a similar recipe it might be a good case study for him. I have no idea if MN will be as "understanding".

That's exactly the way it is in NH.  When I went on a moose hunt, the game warden stopped our car to check on licences, etc. and to make sure the rifles were unloaded.

You can have a rifle magazine sitting on top of your rifle on the passenger seat and it's completely legal.  But as soon as the rifle magazine is inside the magwell you're toast.  Same thing:  hunting regulation.

That's why I'm having a Krink pistol built.  It's silly:  no stock/pistol = OK but stock/rifle = illegal inside the vehicle loaded.

Pistols open carry = no license needed.

Pistols concealed carry = concealed pistol permit.

ETA:  I know this has been debated endlessly in a couple of threads since I've been here.  I personally don't like to open-carry just because I do believe it gives you an edge.  I will open-carry a pistol if I'm hiking/hunting and it's unlikely that I'm going to run into someone.  Otherwise, if there are likely to be other people around, I'll carry concealed.

My wife's friend and her husband from Canada came for a visit a few weeks ago and we all went on a little hike.  After we got back I opened my shirt and he was surprised to see how well I was able to conceal a Sig P220 + two mags.  He never knew it was there.
