I connected it up and when I run windows setup it says No Hard Disks Detected.....

Do I use SATA connection 0 or 1 on the MOBO?

What do I set in the Bios?  It detects the HD on post.

Windows doesn't have any driver support for SATA hard drives.

Did your hard drive come with a floppy disk?  If it did it is the drivers for install.  IF not, go to the company website and download the drivers, and put them on a floppy disk.

Boot your machine up, and when Windows Setup starts watch the bottom of the screen.  It will say "Press F? (I think F5) to load third party drivers" or something like that.  Press the key it tells you to.  Windows will continue along for a little bit and then will ask you to put the disk containing the driver in.  Follow the instructions and this will load SATA drivers so Windows Setup can see the drive.  After the install is done, you should be all set, keep the driver disk in a safe place in case you ever have to repeat this process.

Channel 1 IDE Master CDRW
Channel 2 IDE Master WDC WD74 -Western Digital Raptor

Can I load the drivers from a jump drive?

Have you read the manual regarding the SATA, does your MoBo have RAID settings too?  You may need to load a driver during the Windows install process (IIRC in the first seconds of Windows install you press F6 to load drivers via floppy/flashdrive)

What brand motherboard?

He's correct.   But you need to visit the mobo's website to acquire the correct SATA driver disk.

HD makers do not supply the SATA driver disk due to the wide range of sata chip sets on the market.  If you can not find a driver disk for setup post back in the thread with the mobo model info and I should be able to track one down.

Second option is to go buy a SATA -> IDE converter and install the OS then remove the converter and plug it back into the SATA.

The jump drive is newer tech then the system.  98 didn't support much USB wise until they punched out ME.  Even then it was limited.

Are you putting a Sata on a win98 box?  What exactually do you hope to gain? Win98 was rather limited on how large of a HD it would supprt properly.

Don't know what to tell ya.

You're going to need a floppy drive to make this work.

Take the floppy drive out of the WIN98 machine and put it in the new one.

Trust me, I've set up a ton of computers.  You can check all the BIOS settings you want, but the issue is Windows Setup does not recognize SATA drives without a third party driver, and the only way to check Windows to read it is through the floppy.

I have a gaming rig....it had a 7200rpm WD, upgrading to a 10k rpm raptor.  My shitbox is a POS win98SE HP Pavillion that I just use in emergencies.....

In the Bios I set the SATA mode to IDE, it was set to RAID.

Ummmmm, just loaded the drivers for the Cruzer Mini jump drive for WIN98SE and I get BSOD.

I have a Mac......can I still download the drivers to this jump drive and it wouldn't change anything, right?

Damn, my brain must be fried.  I forgot that I can burn a CD-R on this shitbox.....

Should I use the MOBO drivers or the HD drivers?  I'll copy them both to this CDR just in case.

Anything else I need before I burn this disk?

For XP 32 bit you need to pull Sata controller drivers off the cd,  if you are installing Xp64bit then download the Sata drivers from the gigabyte link.

If you can not figure out where to look on the CD then i'll walk you through on creating a listing to file and you can post the listing.

Well, when it asks for the SCSI controller it says to insert the disk into drive A.

Looks like I have to "borrow" the usb floppy drive from work.

Yep, Or you can pull the floppy and cable from the shitbox and plug'em into the gaming system temporarly.  It does have a floppy controller.

I keep a usb floppy for just this Xp lack of supprt issue.
I also have a USB -> 2.5 and 3.5 IDE tool as well as IDE <-> SATA converter.

You need the drivers for the SATA controller on a floppy.

When windows setup is first starting you need to "press F6 to load a 3rd party SCSI driver" or something like that.  Then you will need to wait for setup to finish loading, then you press 's',  insert the floppy disk then select the correct driver....

Windows setup should now be able to see the disk.

LMAO.  I dun fucked everything up now.

I cannabalized the floppy drive from the shitbox before I put the drivers on a floppy.  Now, I can't get the shitbox to boot again.  Damnit.  I wanted to get this done this morning.

Well, I'll keep ya'll posted on my comedy of errors.
