scrap prices have been going way up lately. i read today that copper is $3.00/pound. which got me thinking. so i went into my penny jar and picked out some pre 1982 pennies (all copper) and put them on the digital scale. it took 180 pennies to get a pound. so in theory if i take those to the scrap man and he gives me $3. i profit $1.20 so now a penny is worth more than a penny? |
![]() I can't beleive you remember that. |
i had some friends in the same boat. they tooke the wire and started a fire to burn off the insulation to get more $$ per pound. i guess the tax for insulation. |

Rats! foiled again- they wont take it unless it is pure copper (or the price is reduced) In 1962, the cent's tin content, which was quite small, was removed. That made the metal composition of the cent 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc. The alloy remained 95 percent copper and 5 percent zinc until 1982, when the composition was changed to 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper (copper-plated zinc). Cents of both compositions appeared in that year |
My buddy here in Kosovo was having his folks' house repaired in New Orleans, when he came over. They had just repaired the plumbing. Some crackheads came in and stole all the copper pipe, AND LEFT THE WATER ON. Several more thousands of dollars' worth of damage. So, his parents get to stay in Mississippi a little while longer. |

check this out... coinflation.com ...scroll down a bit. it'll tell you how much metal value is in your coins. interesting... all nickles are worth 6.5 cents as scrap nickel. btw, there is no law against destroying currency. if someone can find one post it because this has been debated to death on coin forums and it seems to be false. |
Copper today close at ~$3.34/lb. |
