Who here is running service pack 2 and what do you think of it?

I ran it initially, but them some of my programs wouldn't work right, like video cam and stuff so I removed it.

Is it any better now?  My tech support for service pack 1 runs out in October, so I'm wondering if I need to go ahead and download SP 2

Thanks

I run SP2 on all of my machines and all of the machines that I take care of at work (about 100 total).

There is a built in firewall and pop-up blocker in SP2.  Just go to the Services Applet under Administrative tools and disable the firewall service.  For the pop-up blocker, in Internet Explorer click Tools -> Pop-Up Blocker -> Turn Off Pop-Up Blocker.

Everything should work fine.

At this point there is no reason not to run SP2. But since you haven't had it installed for so long you have left yourself open to quite abit of malware. I would recommend doing a full format and reinstall with SP2. If you have reloaded you system in awhile it's probably time to do so anyway.

I have yet to see anything that doest work with SP2.

It's just the firewall that causes some issues - and that can be tweaked.  I cannot imagine not being on SP2.

I am always on the latest and greatest.  With automatic updates turned on - its so easy to be current.

Honestly - I am surprised your machine isnt infected with all kinds of vulnerabilities.  You must be running a good hardware/software firewall, and antivirus.

FARALAK is right - every Windows program published runs just fine under SP2.  Or I should say when installed on a system with SP2 already loaded.  The problems occur when you take an existing system that already has a bunch of apps installed and then try to apply SP2.

If you want to update your current machine, then I strongly suggest starting with a fresh install.  For instance, recently a buddy's laptop puked, so I decided it was time to format and start over.  First I restored Windows XP off the "recovery discs" (it's really just copying a disk image, not an "installation").  The machine is a few years old and the factory discs are SP1.  So I went through and uninstalled all the crapware and trialware that came loaded from the OEM.  When I was down to nothing but Windows I then loaded Service Pack 2.  After that I started installing the apps and everything runs great with no problems.

So glock223, if you really want to load SP2 (and you should), I seriously recommend you listen to Overlord66 and start from scratch with a fresh install.  If not, then I recommend that you do NOT try and apply SP2 over your existing system.  Because if you do it will quite possibly puke and you'll just end up formatting and starting over anyway.

Keep saying that.

I like the sound of that.

I recently upgraded about 30,000 desktops to SP2.  Sure... we had some issues - but nothing major at all.  Sure - we did application testing beforehand... but 99% of all our business apps had no issues.

Then why not back up whats important... and *try* the upgrade.  Like I said, 30,000 upgrades later.... we stake our business on that approach.

If it pukes (it wont) then you are free to format and clean install.

A simple SP upgrade is WAY easier.

Its funny I jus saw this post. This morning I jus finally updated to SP2. I had the CD for about a year, but heard horror stories about it. microsoft keeps sending me updates saying that in Oct, they will no longer service SP1, so I figured it was best to take the plunge and update, I didnt use the CD I had, I jus DL it from their site. Didnt take too long and so far so good, all my prgrams work.

I am running SP2, but I had to scratch the hard drive and reload from scratch.
