I have tried for the past 3 days to gather info from this site using the search function.  Bottom line is doesn't work.  I think out of 25 searches, maybe 1 has come back with something.  And why is it limited to 30 days?  I hate to post questions that have been addressed 50 times already and I know how much members like that too.

Any ideas?  Also, it sucks to have to wait 60 seconds when your post comes back with nothing.

Sorry for the rant, but I am here to learn.

Poney up the $24 then you'll get a far more useful search function as well as access to the archives.

Searching costs bandwith and server time, you don't get those for free on a site this size.

My bad I guess.  When I joined in 2000, everything here was free and it was great.

I had no idea you could become a team member, as I have been away for about 4-5 years.

Thank You.

+1 on that i thought team members were people who helped mod the boards and admin.
where is the whole 24.00 thing at i never saw it is it per month or year lifetime?
just curios i have been on here for a while mostly just lurking but never saw any membership stuff. any other advantages beside a better search feature.
i always thought the search was sucky never knew i had an option.

Check the top of the page.  Online store.  It now allows you to upgrade to team membership as I understand it.  Too lazy, haven't gotten around to it yet.  And it's yearly as I understand it.  Think there might be a lifetime option for more coin though.

I don't know what is worse the search function or all the people complaining about topics being repeated every month or so.  The member search is better but it's still not great.

My biggest complaint is that you cannot search sub forums.  For example, you can search Equipment Exchange but you cannot search AR Parts - Used.  This can be a real drag when you want to see what's available in 9mm parts.  You get many pages of stuff for pistols with a half dozed rifle parts posts mixed in.  Same problem looking for 223/5.56 AK stuff.

When you a team member you can seach the archive's message body...  Really helps in finding what your looking 4. Most of the info I want to look up is not in the title.

The 60 second wait goes away also.

Bronze membership gives you access to the Team forum, gives you discounts on the SEAKs/SEBRs, and allows you to enter the free 'Team Members Only' contests.  IIRC one of which is going on right now thanks to Aimless.

There are higher level memberships (Silver & Gold) which give you space on the media server to store your photos and a AR15.com e-mail address.

In addition to the part about not being able to search subforums, the username search is case sensitive which sucks given the way sOMe uSeRnaMes are formatted.

Sometimes the google 'search this site' feature helps, though.   It won't return results for recent posts but you have a lot more freedom in the search criteria.

Forest, a lot of us, myself included, use ad blocking software that blocks most of the ads that appear at the top of the page.  It sucks to have ads blocked for the ownership, but some of the ads on other sites are so annoying that some type of block is almost mandatory.  We get so used to seeing blank white spots that we forget to turn the blocker off when we visit sites like Arfcom that are more friendly with their ad designs.

Some of the recent posts don't show up in the "within 24hr" search either.

YMMV, but I never seen such a bunch a whinning s in my life.

Forget the fact that the membership info is directly up top (to those with the good sense NOT to block the ads), appears the vast majority of the folks who have posted in this thread couldn't find their own butt with either hand using a search engine anyhow.........

Learn how "search" properly (for those that have paid for the search perk) using the proper codes and terms and you'll be able to find anything you want.

FOR THOSE non-TEAM MEMBERS, I know this will be hard for you, but when you find a thread you like, want to bookmark it or just think at some time (in-order to help someone else) ya might need to get back to a thread, try this:

1: copy the address of the thread above in your browser
2. create a AAAR15thread.doc file in Word or any other similar program
3. paste "that" address into the file, (with a short description of what it is to remind ya)

Now you have a file that should show at the TOP (thanks to AAAAs) of your Word.doc files with the addresses of your bookmarked files, which can be accessed at any time.

(right up to the point when Goatboy changes the addresses of everything all over again)

Mike

ps - cannot believe this is so god-almighty DIFFICULT for folks to figure out......... there are always ways to access things but it does require using one's head for something besides a hat rack....

The non-archive search lacks the ability to search for multiple fields and the body of the messages.

Mr Wilson, <personal attack removed>. You really make me want to spend money here so I can listen to your cocky mouth.

There so much crap tacked to the top, that it's pretty easy to miss between that and 100 ads.  I hope to be perfect like you one day.

Have a great day.

Searches are typically only as good as the search string you enter. Finding the right string to find the right threads on ARFCOM takes a bit of practice, but it can be learned. Try very general searches like "EOTech" or "Bushmaster". That will bring back lots and lots of results. Also, be sure what selection you are searching for. If you want to find thread titles, make sure that is selected. If the wrong search option is selected you won't get any results.

ARFCOM also archives every thread that is more than 3 months old, so you have to have membership to access the archives which are loaded with great information. That is why folks try to bump threads that are useful, to keep them in circulation.

don't bother spending money on a membership just for searching, the search engine doesn't work much better anyway. Get the membership so you can have a cool avatar. <-----

p.s. why doesn't arfcom use one of the more versatile forum codes available? This has got to be the crappiest one in existance.

There are a few different forum products out there....and quite a few of them are easy to hack and aren't built to handle the kind of volume ARFCOM has.

It also helps when the titles are spelled correctly. I wish AR15.com had the ability to search the body of threads for non-archived topics.

Wow, that's a great idea.  Maybe you could sell this 'bookmark' idea to MS.  They might even have somebody smart enough who could build it right into the web browser so that it would be easier to use...
