Open the task manager and see what's really running in the background.

Or start deleting useless stuff.

Also hit your msconfig and turn off stuff you don't need.

I'm curious, exactlly what do you need. I mean minimum. When I hit MSCONFIG it lists alot of stuff. I don't know what is safe to shut down.

If done from the desktop, control/alt/delete brings up the task manager.  Sometimes, you might have an icon in the lower right hand corner for the task manager too.

I've got 31 running on this machine right now, with only 385 RAM (obviously NOT my gaming machine), including Task Manager (to check), Outlook Express and IE Explorer (to be here) with only 2% CPU usage. I could shut down a few more if I need to. Any processes runnning for User Name (as opposed to System) can probably safely unchecked in msconfig (except AntiVirus software and such).

How long since your last reboot? Windows tends to accumulate stuff it's supposed to automatically delete.

Maybe this can get you started;

Go to:
Start
Run

Open:
MSCONFIG

Go to the Startup tab

This is all stuff I deactivated on mine (some are dead registry links that I haven't got around to taking out yet) - you definately don't need them to run at startup:

Direct CD
ASMonitor
AT Notes
caissdt
edonkey2000
ppActive detection
istsvc
msmsgs
nerocheck
regclean
drgtodsc
spysweeper
superantispyware
sacc
realsched
registrybooster
viewmgr
winampa
yahoomessenger
adobegammaloader
adobereaderspeedlaunch
metacafe
microsoft office one note 2003 quick launch
microsoft office
quicken

You can shut any of them off that you have, then reboot and your system will work normally. You probably have other programs running that I don't have - you should post what you have left.

Even with all that stuff turned off, I still have 44 running processes and am using 418mb (although I do have a bunch of stuff running that I don't "need", but i want.

You can also type the process name into Google and see what you get. Safer than just turning stuff off to see what'll happen. Trust me, found this out the hard way.
