I was wondering if any of you who have learnt a language through self-study could give me any tips and suggestions on doing so; the reason being that I am planning on learning German to improve my future resume and so I can read older mathematics and chemistry books in their original language.

Thanks

In my experience:

You cant get a speaking proficeny in a language through self study alone. French by virtue of have a French grammer when I was young, I can read quite well. Composition, barely any. Speaking, forget about it.

I have been listening to the Learn In Your Car Spanish CDs (Level 1) during my commute.  They also offer French, Italian, German, Japanese and Russian.  I'm only on the second CD but I'm quite pleased with how much I've learned already.  It's conversational only, you would need to learn reading / writing with another course.

ive used pimsleur langauge cd's for spanish and am starting on egyptian arabic now. it works but to get any kind of proficiency you will have to start talking to people and finding ways to expand your vocabulary. if you stop using the langauge it will slowly disappear from your memory.

Well... My main goal is to be able to read, and hopefully write, in several languages. At least that way, I can take an immersion course sometime and have the grammar and vocabulary down enough to help picking up the spoken language easier.

EDIT: I also want to add that I have plenty of native speaker friends, all at least in college or college educated, of German,French,Hebrew,Arabic, etc. so I can easily get one of them to "tutor" me in whatever language I want to learn.

I know, I took Chinese for a semester and then took Arabic for two, and I cannot remember anything more complex than asking for directions, ordering at a restaurant type of stuff.
