Hi Guys,
Can anyone point me to some good guides on authoring/ burning DVDs? I have been trying Nero 7 , but probably WON'T be purchasing it as Nero Vision 4 nearly killed my computer, not to mention the one DVD I burned with Nero Vision had TONS of horrible audio artifacts.

I'd really like some software that will let me take an .avi and "preview" it letting me add chapters where I want to, then encode it and burn it, basically I want something like Nero Vision that actually WORKS, and won't crash so bad that it requires a system restore.

If it matters I was trying to cram about 4 hours of video to one disc, to save on discs.

Best resouce I've found so far ... Lots of different tools

www.doom9.org/index.html?/software2.htm

ETA  I use Nero as my primary burning software As far as your basic burners it is the best.  There may be other things that profesionals use but that is your best bet.  Get the latest version if you can.

Yep same stuff I used to use until I figured my time was better spent renting from block buster and using DVDxCopy.

Everything that is needed is available at that doom9 link.

But, if you don't want to have to figure everything out on your own, there are multiple over the counter software programs made for making your home movies into DVD movies complete with menus and such.  I've used several different versions of the Pinnacle Studio software and always found it easy, as long as your computer can handle the load.

Since you already have the videos in .avi format, it would be very simple to put a DVD together.

Thanks for the help,
I'm going to try nero vision once more before I give up, only this time to reduce any problems I'm only going to try to fit 2 hours of video to the disc instead of 4. It seems like the right program for me, except that it had a crashing issue that I think I've resolved.

Hey you pros... what do you think of the Sony Vegas Movie Studio + DVD?  Espcially for someone like me who hasn't taken any classes in this sort of thing... is it pretty user friendly?

I have TONS of digital video I'd like to edit and throw in DVD's...

Sorry for the hijack, but I'm curious and newegg sells the program for pretty cheap.

Have you ever used Adobe Premier...?

Vegas software (even before they were bought by Sony) has always been geared toward people who have some kind of training. Nero has some pretty powerful authoring tools that would be easier for consumers to use.

I'd tell you to 'obtain' a 'trial' copy to test first before you purchase it, either an official trial from their website or from other 'sources'...

Gotcha.  Thanks!  No, I've never touched Adobe Premier- I did hear that it's the stuff for pros.  I'd really like something that does alot, but is user friendly.  In my perfect world....  I'll see what I can do about "obtaining" a copy.

Ulead Media Studio Pro + Ulead DVD MovieFactory are pretty user friendly.  Not as powerful as Premiere, but still quite a lot of features for the price.

...and "extended evaluation" versions are readily available if you want to try before you buy.

i use divx to burn onto a dvd+r/-r's  it comes with a converter you can use that will convert the files (like avi and all those others) to be able to play through your regular DVD....OR do what i did, just burn the DVD in avi format and get a DVD that plays that format

I'm so bad at this stuff...  I have some .mov clips that my niece wants burned onto a DVD- ready to watch in a commercial player kind of stuff.  Hell, it took me awhile to even figure out that they had to be re-formatted!    I figured that the software that came with her camera would do anything necessary on the fly.  Dumb assumption.  I'm not too proud.  I can admit it.

I thought I was halfway decent with this stuff and I'm still confused as hell
