not that I doubt that he told you that, but if there was top secret stuff there, he wouldn't be allowed to tell you anyway, so unless any of us have actually been there and are willing to break secrecy then it is all just speculation

It used to be a "high tech military testing facility", but now it's nothing because people are constantly watching it hoping for a visit with ET.  You can bet that anything secret has been moved somewhere else, while Groom Lake continues to attract the people that would be watching for such activity.

Not quite right.

It USED to be a SECRET high-tech military testing facility, but now it's merely a high-tech military testing facility.

It's where stealth technology, UAVs, and new weapons systems have been developed and tested.  Yes, there is another facility where some of that is now done, but lots of work is still done at Groom Lake every day.  There are three flights a day from Nellis to Groom Lake, all full of techs and engineers.  They work on stuff that we won't know about for another 10 years.

Interesting.  Sounds like it must be used mostly for R&D, but not much testing.  It would be kind of hard to test when the area is surrouded by UFO watchers.

my speculation... spy stuff.. foreign stuff hijacked and flown in and studied here, not primarily of course.. but just one of the many things that go on here..

I had a friend who was stationed there in the mid-80's who was a tire kicker.

Next time I see her I'll ask her.

Don't know if she'll talk about it, but the worst she can say is no.

Well, it didn't always used to be watched, and most days it still isn't.  The A-12s (SR-71 cousin) were flown out of Groom Lake for several years before they were moved to operational bases, and the F-117 was tested and flown out of there before it was made public.  As were several stealth development platforms, including the Have Blue (the prototype for the F-117) and Tacit Blue UAV.  The Predator and Global Hawk flew out of there in early testing.

And, as someone has pointed out, captured Soviet aircraft were flown out of Groom Lake for testing and eval.

Given the times, the fact that all of this stuff was kept secret isn't any big surprise.  And rest assured that there are some amazing things being tested now that we won't find out about for some time, but they will be based on new earth-based technology, not alien spacecraft or Mr. Fusions.

You have to figure that our military needs SOME PLACE to secretly test and develop new aircraft and weapons, and Groom Lake is a pretty good location, being fairly remote and pretty near the Nellis Range Complex (which includes the Tonopah weapons test range).  There are hundreds of square miles of restricted military space where planes from Nellis constantly fly (Red Flag is based there), so an occasional "secret" flight of a new test aircraft would hardly be noticed.

Secrecy always leads to imaginative tales, but the reality is rarely as exciting as fantasy (unless you're really into aviation technology).

My mom has been there several times, she works for DOD and has done stuff with staff there, never told me much about it....other than that she had to ride a bus to get into the place and had an escort, but then that's not uncommon for a civy in a high-security place.

I'm stationed at Nellis AFB which is down the road from Area 51 by a few miles.  I love to fuck with people who start asking questions about Area 51.  I get all serious and say things like, "I'm not at liberty to discuss that."  I generally mess with people who start needling me about it.  I don't work there and I've never been anywhere near the place but it sure fun to mess with people who get all jacked up about that place.

I work at the Base Law Enforcement Desk and we get calls all the time from nut cases all the time telling us that things are coming from Area 51 to put things in their brains or that the gov't is coming to kill them.  If I wouldn't get in trouble for it I'd love to fuck with these people more.  One night we got like 22 calls from one guy.  I finally got an address out of one guy and I sent the civilian cops out to lock this crazy bastard up.
