Have ya'll seen it on their website yet? It appears that Bushmaster is getting into the big bore game with a new AR and a new round. The .45 Bushmaster. Don't let the name fool you. This isn't a Bushmaster in .45 ACP, this is a .45 caliber rifle cartridge, probably similar to the .50 Beowulf, .499 LWR or .458 SOCOM. www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/the45bushmaster.asp Interesting. |
yep they need to just pick one I like 50 beowulf but the bullets are expensive and kinda limited so I think Socom is a better choice as you can use the wide variety of 45 cal bullets out there |

Why do we need the .45BM? Just another cartridge of the month... Reminds me of this: A guy I work with has a .50 Beowoulf...All I ever here is "my Bayo this..My Bayo that" "...when I bring my Bayo to the range people look at me" "you know the Bayo is used by the SEALS...I had to wait a long time to get my Bayo because the company is filling orders for the special forces..." "My Bayo is going to kick like a mule with that big round..." He said all this before he even shot it...Whats worse: This is his first AR15..and he doesn't even reload... ![]() He had the thing for a month...had to wait to buy the pricey ammo for it...then finally bought a dot sight for it... Helped him sight it in... The thing jams...has more a bit more recoil than I thought...but certainly not bad... I honestly don't think it is anything to write home about... It could be worse...I could work with some antigun retard I bought a box of Buffalo Bore Ammo for my 45-70 with him in mind for next time we go shooting together... I'll just incocently suggest that he try it... and introduce him to the world of real hard kicking rifles ![]() |
| I'm excited and glad that they are doing this. But like many others I wish they would have standardized one of the others thats already on the market. Besides, that will cost double or triple what you would pay for a Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 and ammo for that is cheap. |
I agree I feel most of the big bore ARs ar kinda dumb ( just buy a damn 45-70) but to say a 5.56 is better to in every way is ignorant it is apples to oranges the big bore ARs are much better for tough heavy game at short range |
Good idea....AR in 45-70 |
That's what the 1911 already shoots. You get a 45acp in a barrel approaching 16" and it comes out over sonic. Why not have a few 45s, it's not like the 303 Savage, 300 Savage, .30WCF, 30 Remington. 30-03, the 30 Luger, 30 Carbine, 30 Win Mag, 30 Weatherby Mag, 300 Rem Short Ultra Mag, 30 WSM, WSSM etc aren't all being used all the time. I wonder if there isn't a licensing issue about using some of the various .45 cartridges designed for the AR platform that cause companies to bring out a competing cartridge. Yes, having a standard cartridge would be preffered, but a company might not make all the money quickly like a proprietary cartridge could bring in. |
You do realize that .45 Bushmaster is going to be completely and entirely different from .45 ACP right? This is NOT a pistol caliber by any stretch of the imagination. This is a rifle round. Not only that, but it is a huge rifle round. The rounds currently out there for .458 SOCOM, .50 Beowulf and .499 LWR shoot large caliber 300 grain projectiles and their muzzle velocity is in the neighborhood of 2000 ft. per second. You also should know that the .50 Beowulf, .458 SOCOM and .499 LWR were invented after Somolia because the troops were complaining that their 5.56 rifles were almost useless against the malnurished Somalis. The round would pass right through them without turning or fragmenting because they were the "Skinnies" (as the troops called them) didn't have enough mass to provide enough resistance to the bullet in order for it to fragment. |
Yeah, my .499 LWR is good for about 20 rounds before it starts jamming. |
Agreed, I like it, will wait and see, ballistics, reliability, etc. I already have a 45/70, that's why I'm interested. Of course it is better if you reload for these types of rifles and I do. |
Great. More boxes of oddball cartridges sitting on to top shelf collecting dust (next to the 357 Sigs, 356 TSWs, etc.) of every gunshop in the US in five years. ![]() Why doesn't someone just get it over with, and come out with a GyroJet AR, ... or one that uses trounds... |
<shrug> My Beowulf goes 10 rounds (max cap in a 30 rd Thermold) full-auto when I borrow an M16 lower, just for shits and grins without a hiccup... One of these days I gotta start reloading..$1 a round is pricey.

cleaning the black powder residue out of the gas system might get to be a pain, too. |
