Who here has an ice chewing habit? For the past 17 years or so, I've had an insatiable desire to chew ice. If I go to a restaurant an order a drink, I have to eat every single piece of ice in my glass.

I've heard a few old wives tales that describe ice eating as an indication of an illness or lack of minerals in the body. Anyone else heard of this.

Damn, now where is the glass of ice water?

I heard a rumor that it is a sign of being sexually frustrated.  No way to back that one up.

I've heard that too.

I get pie an average of once a day, but it still could be true.

Do you check windows and doors 20 times before you leave or anything else like that ?

Nope, no OCD here, just an ice chewing addiction.

I chew ice when I'm driving - I've found it's one of the only things that helps me stay awake.

*I do this only when I'm driving alone*

My fillings are very temperature sensitive.  I'd be on my knees in pain if I tried chewing ice.

YES, it's absolutely true.  It's not just the fact that you are biting something very hard, it's the extreme cold that weakens the enamel on your teeth.

I asked my dentist about this. He said that it would not hurt my teeth because the teeth are a lot harder than the ice. He also said that people with small jaws could develope problems with their jaw, but that I should be alright.

But hey, maybe he just needs more business.

I believe the urge to chew ice is a sign of iron deficiency.

Can't stand it, doing it or hearing it. Sends chills up and down my spine. Same goes for smacking chewing gum or people eating with their mouths open. It's so bad I almost can't stand to eat at a table with other people, every smacking sound is amplified x10 in my head. Weird huh ?

Best friend is a hygenist and she said the same thing.  Chewing ice is a bad idea, especially if the ice is very hard.

Yeah, and rock is much harder than water but that didn't stop the Grand Canyon from forming.

I chew it every now and then. If it hasn't all melted by the time I finish my drink or if the waitress is taking forever for a refill and I'm still really thirsty.

Uhh, you might want to get some blood tests. You may have an issue with your hypothalamus. It can be a sign of iron deficiency, but I think it's more common in middle aged women.

As to the teeth issue, the cold ice contracts the microscopic cracks in your enamel, and then when they expand again they can be bigger. Enough of this can cause problems. I've heard dentists say this.

Just thought I'd add, this is just internet advice, and not a professional opinion. Especially considering the fact that I am no a professional anymore, and not a doctor.

At home I never use ice though, water=bottled and DrPepper = out the can.

Esp. if its crushed ice (SONIC)... I just cant resist crushed ice.

I don't do it at resaurants, but when I go to Sonic and get the strawberry limeade, I have to eat the ice so I can get to the strawberries and limes in the bottom!
