Who here has an ice chewing habit? For the past 17 years or so, I've had an insatiable desire to chew ice. If I go to a restaurant an order a drink, I have to eat every single piece of ice in my glass. I've heard a few old wives tales that describe ice eating as an indication of an illness or lack of minerals in the body. Anyone else heard of this. Damn, now where is the glass of ice water? |
I asked my dentist about this. He said that it would not hurt my teeth because the teeth are a lot harder than the ice. He also said that people with small jaws could develope problems with their jaw, but that I should be alright. But hey, maybe he just needs more business.

| Can't stand it, doing it or hearing it. Sends chills up and down my spine. Same goes for smacking chewing gum or people eating with their mouths open. It's so bad I almost can't stand to eat at a table with other people, every smacking sound is amplified x10 in my head. Weird huh ? |
Best friend is a hygenist and she said the same thing. Chewing ice is a bad idea, especially if the ice is very hard. |
Yeah, and rock is much harder than water but that didn't stop the Grand Canyon from forming. |

Uhh, you might want to get some blood tests. You may have an issue with your hypothalamus. It can be a sign of iron deficiency, but I think it's more common in middle aged women. As to the teeth issue, the cold ice contracts the microscopic cracks in your enamel, and then when they expand again they can be bigger. Enough of this can cause problems. I've heard dentists say this. Just thought I'd add, this is just internet advice, and not a professional opinion. Especially considering the fact that I am no a professional anymore, and not a doctor. |
