just bought an m1 carbine jump case from the flea market...has an insignia i cant identify..seems to be stenciled over the original "US" marking, can anyone help ?

not a snake...just an "S" the carbine case is dated 1944

That was my second guess but since the bag is dated '44 the proper lettering would be "N" for the Nike missile anchor detachment.

It may be an insignia for the United States Maritime Service is about the closest I can find. That service was formed I believe in 1938. check out this link.

Stenciled OVER the original US insignia. I would bet a few bucks that it is the insignia of whatever service of the country that we furnished it to.
I'm betting it is Vietnamese of some kind, the anchor design is very similar to that used by them in other devices and insignia.

It's not a US Merchant Marine insignia. That's an S and not a fouled anchor

If I were guessing, it's probably insignia related to South Korean Marines, South Vietnamese Marines or some of the South Vietnamese special forces.
