I know this is a butt simple job but I seem to be having a problem at step 8 in the auto setup on the Linksys software program, I followed the setup directions and can even access the internet with the system set up on the home computer but every time it ask for my password in the setup for the wireless router it fails to connect the lap top.

Home computer is at port 1 for the router.

Thanks for any help

Until one of the experts can chime in, I can tell you this.

We had the same problem at work. There was a conflict known to Linksys. Once the guys resolved the conflct in the manner suggested by Linksys, everything began to work fine.

We had the same symptoms you describe. My laptop could not log on.

I don't have a lot of knowledge as to hot to explain how to fix a problem with your router, but I had problems setting mine up when I bought mine, and I called the tech support number on the box, and they were awesome. lots of help.

I tried it for a client after not being able to log into the to the router's set up page...
The SW said ' no router detected' so I sent the router back.

I had trouble with mine because it didn't store the settings I had entered.  After many attempts I finally got it working.

Went to the Linksys website and downloaded the fix software and still have internet on the home computer but now it says no internet detected on the lap top.

One step closer and if all else fails I have another new wireless router in the garage.

first setup the router with no encryption.  that way you know both devices DO work

Did that,

I downloaded the software on the laptop as instructed for the adaptor and then did the router software on the laptop.

Then tested it and it ran fine, then I downloaded the software on the home computer and hooked up the cables and then step 8 is where it ran into trouble when asking for a password it was rejecting the password.

Now I do have internet with the router to the home computer but it will not pickup the laptop adaptor.

Setup your router for remote access under the Administration tab and one of us can get the router setup for you.  Then when its done being setup just remove the remote access and you'll be good to go.

PS what model and version is your router.  You may be able to change the firmware and gain tons of functionality including better transmit power.

Linksys shipped the routers with the old software. For it to work, you need to use NetSet from the site. Set the dsl up the way it was BEFORE the router was installed then open netset and follow the instructions. Should work.

Found the glitch was in the router and Windows firewall was on for the laptop, installed the update from Linksys and dumped the old software and re-installed the new software and here I am online with the laptop.

Thank you all for the help.

the windoz firewall was not part of the problem.

Every time I lose power (several times a week), the router forgets the network name, the password, and the 128 bit encription. When the power comes back on (even after a few seconds), I end up with an unformatted router, just like it was out of the box. Don't these people use non-volatile RAM?

I had a similar problem.  My kids machine is a desktop with wireless connection.  My machine is hardwired to the router.  The router setup is for WEP 128 bit with password, and the router will only let the MAC ID of the wireless NIC card connect.

Everytime we start up the kids machine, the wireless NIC card sees the access point (router) but no Internet.  I have them login with the profile I set up for them on the Linksys software, but it takes at least a minute or two for the Internet to connect.  Is this normal?

FWIW, I intentionally disconnected my router (wireless B & G with speedbooster) from the AC power one time to clear a hangup with the wireless connection, and did not lose the settings for the router.

Have to take your word on that since this project could be named, wirless dummy 101 for me.

The router had dropped off so I went and purchased another one last light, did a clean install and with the new router it runs 100%.

I had the same problem.  I called technical support where Jeff ( with a heavy Indian accent ) helped me step by step to get it up and running.  Use WPA encryption and let the system generate the password and then just enter it into your laptop.

that my friend is NOT normal  i would get that rma'd.

any network equipment i setup  i try to setup a apc (battery backup)  hooked up to the cable AND the router.   it solves alot of network issues.

you can get a apc for $60 bucks.  you don't need anything major expensive just some battery time

I'll second the battery backup for computer and network equipment.  I picked up a Smart UPS 1500 from work for free because the batteries went bad.  $117 later I had brand new batteries and a $600 UPS unit :)
