Ok arfcom computer people.
Which is better for long term storage of media and other files? DVD or a new Hard drive?

I have no clue, I just wanted to vote.

dvd's are  cheap and backup 8gb at a time (with dual layer).

I do both though. I have a 2nd  hard drive that I back up my files to for easy access (using maxtor one touch backup) I backup that data to DVD when I feel the need for the safety of another backup.   Doing dvd backup takes me a few hours, so I tend not to do them as often as I should.

If you're talking about LONG term storage, then a HDD is the better way to go.

Back up your critical, never able to be replaced data, pull the drive and lock it away someplace.

Use optical media for more near-term needs since, even sitting on a shelf somewhere, it can degrade over time.

harddrive will fail.       i will never backup critical data on just a harddrive.

your best bet is to backup to muliple sources.  cd/dvd/flashdrive  never just have one copy of that data.

This isn't for critical data, it's mostly for big video files that take up tons of HDD space and audio files as well. The ~240 GB I have currently is running out. By long term I meant a few year, not decades.

I'm trying to be CHEAP. Either a new HDD or a DVD burner + media should both cost me under $100.

DVD:  It's a well known, high density medium.  The drives are realtivly cheap, and abundant, as well as the disks.
