Another board that I'm on there's a 9 page thread about tipping and I seem to be the only one who doesn't tip atleast 15% if not more.

So do you tip atleast 15%?
7/11/2006 8:49:01 AM EDT
[#1]
15% if it's good.

Less to nothing if it sucked, the service that is.

Learn to fucking type.

15-20% depending on service.

Because of the previous industry I was in, I'm prone to tipping higher than usual, unless the service is unbearable.

Generally 3 times the sales tax is what I go on.

20% if the service was especially good or if at a very nice restaurant.

I don't tip.  I don't get paid any more if I do my job exceptionally rather than adequately and the things I do are FAR more difficult than anything in the service industry, so I fail to see the point.

20% at least. Sometimes up to 50% for good service.

Depends on the service and check total, but I don't restrict myself to %'s. For a 10-20 dollar lunch it breaks down like this.

Rude Service: $.05
Bad service: $0
Fair service: $2-3
Good service: $3-5

A lot of people might think that's a bit heavy, but I eat lunch in the same resteraunt 3+ times a week.  I know all the employees, consider them all friends and feel good about tipping them a little better than the average customers.  I've only tipped under $3 there once.

About 10% for decent service.  15-18% for outstanding service.  0% for poor service.
7/11/2006 8:58:38 AM EDT
[#17]
I usually shoot for 20%.
If the service is poor enough to justify a lousy tip, then I get up and leave. Plenty of other places around to spend my money.
I haven't done it very often, but it has happened a few times.
I can recall a Denny's out West several years ago, and a local Applebee's twice. Never again will I set foot in another Applebee's.
7/11/2006 8:58:41 AM EDT

If the service is crappy, I'll leave like 4 cents. If they are good, I give 30%. Tipping is not a gift, they earn it.

I just had lunch, bacon cheeseburger and fries.

After the waitress snapping at me "I can only carry so much!!!" when I asked for some ketchup...

Her tip was NOT A DAMNED THING!!!

Generally, I tip $2 when I dine out.  IF someone is with me, then it's $4.

Bad service = no tip.

Sorry, but why should I be forced to compensate for a womans poor career choice, taking a job with a very low minimum wage.

How many times do YOU get tipped for doing your job???
7/11/2006 9:04:00 AM EDT
[#21]
Usually 18% to 20 % for service that isn't entirely screwed up. My expectations are pretty low. But if the server is a soup sandwich, He/she gets a pocket full of nothing.

One thing I never do, is blame the quality of the food on the server. I will never send food back. I get up and leave if the food is poorly prepared/presented.

Had I been in your shoes, I would have replied with a nice firm "Fuck YOU" and walked out. If a waitress can't handle stress, then she shouldn't be in the people industry.

I don't tip based on % just cause I can't do the math.  It just depends on how go my server is.  One day me and my buddies tipped a girl at AppleBee's 30 bucks off a 20 dollar check.  Of course it was one of the guys wives and he tripped her to get money from his credit card so he would have to pay the cash advance fee.

I used to be a waitress and they only get payed 2.15 an hour because people tip by not tipping you are cutting there pay.  I try to tip depending on the service and how good the food was I have been in customer service for over 10 years and I have had to deal with all kinds of people and I got payed anywere form 6-15 dollars an hour.  I do not think that it is right for them to only get payed 2.15 an hour.  There are a lot of single moms that waitress because they can work around there children's schedule.  You sould rethink your thought on tipping and put your self in our shoes sometimes that type of job is all you can get if you do not have much of a choice and there is nothing else out there.

I worked as a cook for 6 years in a beachfront restaurant in CNY.  I've seen the girls come into the kitchen bawling because of one thing or another; it would happen all the time- at least once a week.  Servers have to put up with a ton of BS every day.  Usually I'm a bit more forgiving, $5.00 is my base.

Once I waited for my food for a really long time, and the waitress was pleading with the cooks to hurry- apparently they had been running slow all night as the other guests looked very unhappy and some were downright belligerent.  I tipped her 100% because I knew she was going to get the shaft from all of her tables.

However, there are types of waitresses that have the bitch or idiot syndrome that gets them virtually nothing from me.

One waitress I worked with insisted on trying to memorize each of her orders.  She would never write anything down because she was trying to "improve her memory." She screwed up nearly every order she sent back and screwed the entire kitchen up often because we had to backtrack to fulfill her tardy orders.  The worst was when she did it on the 4th of July in a beachfront restaurant right next to where the fireworks display would be lit off.  We petitioned to get her fired.

Why? Let's combine the two!

If these restaruants were union, the waitresses would earn a livable wage, regardless of tips...

...Of course, a sandwich would cost $50, and $15 of that would be paying the pension of a waitress that retired 20 years ago.

The point is, the service industry pays shit because tipping is EXPECTED.  This works well if you're a waiter at a high-dollar restauraunt, it works crappy if you sling hash at Denny's.

Especially with customers like YOU.

That is the set pay for anyone in that industry it is not there fault that is the only type of job that is available were they can work some choose to work for that and others say ok I guess that is okay I can make it up by giving good service and getting a decent tip.  There are people who have been doing this for years and they are fine with it when I first started being a waitress they did not tell me what I was making an hour tey just told me they pay was good.  I did not know until I recieved my pay check and found out that was all I was making so this is not B.S. and if you think that it is you can just keep that to your self I am just trying to open the eyes of people who may have never had to take that type of job so they have no idea what the pay is like.  If you do not tip because you are being removed.  don't do that again. than that is your business and its people like you that make it so bad for the rest of us.  I never chose to take that type of job that was all there was at the time but I will never do that again because I am a single mom and I can not live on that kind of money.

I bartended.  Never had a problem.  People always tipped.  o wait.....Don't want to sterotype but there were always one classification of people THAT never tipped.  Even when you add the 15% due to parties eight more they would short you.  "Get what i'm saying dogs.  "

This is just the way our society is.  Waitresses work on tips.  I think people that don't tip are a bunch of aholes.  IF the service is good.  I have left a fat nothing times before when service is bad.

I don't work on tips but I can say I would be pretty mad if my company did well and I worked my ass off all year and in the end, no bonus.

That is not the point I was trying to make, that is the set standard by the department of laber form what I have been told and it will stay at that unless people try and get that changed.  I only put this on hear so that people would see how this is and would know that 2.15 is all they get payed so tipping is not only a help but in some people's casses
the rest of what they earn for doing there job.  I tip other people like my UPS guy who is great, my mailman, my dry cleaner, and my mechanic.  It is closed minede people like some on this sight that keep the pay for waitresses at 2.15 like they are a lesser person than the rest of us.

With me, you either get a tip or nothing at all.  For pizza/deliveriesI take the price of everything, lets say for example, $21.50.  I will round to the nearest 5 dollar amount and tip that.  meaning, the tip for this would be $3.50.

For dine in resturants, I will tip exactly the same way but add 5 and what ever pocket change is left.

WTF? Accepting a job without first agreeing on the pay is monumentally stupid (I don't know what else to call it), and proof that yes - it is their fault. "How much money will I make?" "Alot, just trust me".

If you do not tip because you are being removed.  don't do that again.
