For the past two weeks, my laptop screen has this green line on the left side, it runs from the top, straight to the bottom. It's only about an 1/8" wide. The only thing I have tried is to restart it  and that has not helped. I've just put up with it until now, it's become real annoying and must be dealt with.  Any suggestions?

The green line is back and it brought with it a yellow line. Now it has two lines and it's running REALLY hot, but I can hear the fan going. I'm afraid it's just a matter of time.

Try updating the video card drivers.

Also, try hooking the laptop to a desktop monitor, and see if the line is on the 3rd party monitor.  That will help you know if it is a video card problem, or a problem with the laptop screen itself.

Hmm... first place I'd start is removing and then reinstalling the most recent video drivers for your machine.

What hardware do you have and what OS/version are you running?

Sounds like a your LCD (monitor) is fried. I've seen these lines before. Try looking for something on Google that displays a series of colors extremely fast to restore the dead pixels. Usually dosn't work, but on occasion it can restore some of them for a brief period of time.

On the BIOS Check (directly after reboot), do you get the green line, or does it not show up Until Windows loads?

I just tried updating video drivers, still have the green line. I'm not a computer literate, so be gentle.  I REALLY hope the screen does not kick the bucket.

Did you try another monitor?  Also, like brass said, do you see the line even when you start the computer, when it is doing the POST tests.

If reinstalling updated video drivers doesn't solve the problem, it is likely that the screen is about to go.

Hook up another monitor to it and see if it has the same problem.

I'm not home and do not have access to hook it up to anothe monitor. The line does appear immediately. It also appears when playing a DVD.  I think it's doomed.  Any deals going on at Dell?

Hook it up to an external monitor.  If it doesnt work, then its the monitor.  I'm guessing it's the monitor.

You will have to go to their site and see if they are offering any deals.

You can also get a great deal on a macbook if you buy through the education store.  You just gotta lie and say you go to college somewhere.

Seen plenty of LCDs do that, I believe it has a hardware problem, hopefully it's under warranty....

You asked about a replacement laptop earlier and the thread, and your current laptop was terrified.  We all know what happens to an arfommers old and busted technology - targets.

It'll be back, these kinds of hardware problems don't go away.
