I have decided I NEED a better .308 MBR. I am selling my CETME towards it. I was thinking FAL, but the SA SOCOM looks quite appealing, as does an AR10. Which? poll inbound |
Don't get'em riled up. It's a tie between the AR10 and the FAL. Shhh. |
you really don't know about the FALs do you, it's very easy to scope and can be very accurate (ed vandenburg customs makes great set up) and you can trick out a FAL like an AR and unlike the AR-10 the fal has an adjustable gas system so I can shoot crap that wouldnt work in a AR-10 |

Ditch the SOCOM idea. Its by far, the worst 308 battle rifle I've owned and I've owned them ALL. My Century L1a1 was a superior rifle to it in ALL aspects. The only thing that comes close is my custom Polytech M1a build. The AR10 is a dirty gun, but it works great. I just prefer the "can't kill it" design of the FAL. Its the best, bar none. Being an owner of each of them and a fan of all, I'd like to think I'm a bit more impartial than some of the FAL nuts here or the M1a nuts at the M14 forums. That being said, the pro's and con's are as follows: FAL: 1) most reliable design more likely to take EXTREME field abuse without failing 2) better optics mounting platform 3) better ergonomics through pistol grip (although new M1a stock platforms have changed this, but at a $600 price tag) 4) cheap mags (in feel and $) 5) el cheapo sights, which probably lead to less accuracy than a normal M1a 6) adjustable gas system 7) can be configured like an AR15 with minimal effort 8) extremely easy to build from a kit (need to buy US parts) 9) shit-tastic trigger 10) more appealing to the eye (if this counts) 11) many configurations available 12) not as accurate, even in "match" or "varmint" versions. 13) much better platofm for mounting a scope M1a: 1) more accurate than FAL 2) better sights 3) better mags 4) not a two piece design like the FAL/AR15 so a tension sling can be used 5) MUCH BETTER trigger (infinitly better!) 6) has many configurations, most of which can be duplicated by the FAL series 7) has crappy scope mounting platform - IMO 8) mags are expensive 9) currently utilized by our military sharp shooter DMR's 10) designed by Americans and owning American history 11) EXCELLENT trigger! 12) somewhat more difficult to build (no problem with US parts!) AR10: 1) Most accurate of them all 2) Best sights of them all 3) M1a modified mags - very reliable, but with craptastic last shot disengage system 4) Best trigger of the 3 5) Best scope mounting platform of the 3 6) Expensive mags 6) Used by our military 7) Its American, through and through 8) Can build multiple configurations with ease 9) Dirtiest gun and easiest to foul after light shooting 10) Most likely to FTE due to my experiences 11) Very Expensive 12) Plenty of configurations and accessories to choose from |
HKTackDriver gives a nice listing here, and after owning the M1A and AR10 I have only a couple of quibbles. M1A: If it is built as a NM tack driver, it will not stay a tack driver without help. Nice gun, no doubt. But the POI will wander after a shooting season, and your armorer will have to check the bedding. AR10: I read the "dirty gun" & FTE stories, and I just don't 'get it' Maybe because I don't shoot a boatload of surplus? But my rifle never gets too dirty to function. FTE ?? Never. Maybe I got a "factory freak" as we say in the muscle car forums. Maybe JP Enterprises adjusted something when I had them cryo the barrel and adjust the trigger, but NEVER a FTE! |

I voted M1A, I've had the chance to shoot an M1A and a AR-10, I prefered the M1A. the FALs I have held were of low quality and felt like junk. (Not to say all of them are that way, just the cheapo home-made FALs I have held at gunshows. I would be interested in trying out a DSA, I hear good things) The .308 debates are about as common as AR15 vs. Ak47, or 1911 v.s. Glock threads. |

Well, the CETME is SPFunds, and I'm giving the proceeds to my mom so she can fix her plumbing and buy firewood for this winter. The prices have gone up, and I wouldn't be able to enjoy my safe full of rifles knowing she was sitting at home in the woods rationing firewood and hoping it lasted through the winter. Maybe I can afford an FAL later on this year, but I'm not counting on it. |
yeah,,,cause their first ones sucked,,just like their first guns. armalite sucks |
What an ignorant post. |
Only because while they are a great rifle in 30-06, in .308 the 8 round CLIP is a lot limiting compared to the other choices, especially for a personal mbr. I can't believe I really said that, usually I'm a reactionary about some things and the Garand is one of them. |

You can make a FAL trigger very nice for only $20, I just did mine. Get a FAL, if you don't like the trigger, order the Falcon Arms Trigger Pull Reduction spring kit. Mine is now about a 5 lb pull and very smooth. Totally changed the shootability of the rifle. Works 100% on all the milsurp ammo I've tried so far. FAL is my favorite semi-auto in .308. Flyer |
Thats on my wish list |
I have a Savage .30-06. Nice shooter for less than $400 new, but I would never choose it over an AR 10 or M1A if I had the additional money to spend and already had a bolt gun. There is little fun factor to a bolt gun. |
After much research, I have decided on an FAL clone. You simply can't find a tougher weapon. |
|
I voted for the fAL. I picked up a carbine version, 12 mags, and have a case of ammo on the way from AIM. Ergonmics are good for me, and I wanted a MBR, not a sniper. Tear down is easy, and it should shoot everything. Mags are cheap, you won't have to have the price of a new gun wrapped up in 20 mags. |

Quoted: I voted bolt driven [photo] three shot group [/photo] I can do nearly that well with my AR10A4. Oh, BTW: With all due regard, three shot groups are not that spectacular. If you want to show-n-tell, use 10 shot groups - more accurately displays skill of shooter and consistency of the rifle. |
+1 I have a DSA FAL STG58 carbine and an LRB M14SA. They are both very nice rifles, but the LRB is just more accurate and reliable. It also feels more like a 'rifleman's rifle' |
