I've been thinking a lot lately about starting a collection of monster handguns.  There's a lot of unique and great looking large pistols out there that have really piqued my interest.  If you can think of any others feel free to add some pics.

1)  .475 Wildey Magnum.  The gun Charles Bronson used in  Death Wish 3.

2)  .44 Automag.  I know that Desertmoon had one of these for a while, which is when it first appeared on my radar.  Lots of similarities to the Wildey.

3)  Mateba Unica .44 autorevolver.  A highly unusual and very beautiful pistol.  I want one with a nickel finish and 8" barrel, although these are very hard to find.

4)  AMT Automag III .30 carbine.  A HUGE 1911 style pistol, in an unusual caliber.

5)  .500S&W shortbarrel model.

6)  S&W .460XVR longbarrel model.

 7)  HK MK23 SOCOM .45ACP

8)  Deagle Fiddy.  Possibly wit beamz.

Edited because I don't know my Charles Bronson films like I should.

They aren't all they are cracked up to be. They are huge. They shoot pretty good, but their size and pricetag are WAAAY too much for my taste.

You might want to reconsider on the Deagle Fiddy.....

I have fired a couple of them, and they have a very bad habit of
throwing the spent casing straight back at your forehead.

It was kind of un-nerving to get hit in the face with hot brass every time you fired the gun.
Shoot one before you buy it.

LAR Grizzly pistol

The Grizzly Win Mag pistol has been developed during early 1980s by L.A.R. Manufacturing Inc (USA; L.A.R. stands for names of company founders - Larisch, Augat and Robinson). This pistol has been designed around the very powerful .45 Winchester Magnum (.45 Win Mag, metric designation 11.43x30mm) ammunition, which generates muzzle energies in the 1100 Joules (810 ft-lbs) region. The prime intended niches for that round and Grizzly pistol were hunting and silhouette shooting, as massive pistol was way too heavy for defensive carry, and .45 Win Mag ammunition was overpowered and generated plenty of recoil. Despite (or because of) merits of .45 Win Mag ammunition, the Grizzly pistol was designed as a multi-caliber platform. Standard Grizzly mark I pistols were sold in .45 Win Mag chambering, but patented factory conversion kits were available for conversion of said pistol into one of many popular calibers, including .45ACP, 10mm Auto, .357 Magnum and several others. Such kits included new barrels, barrel bushings, springs, magazines, as well as "multi-caliber" extractors and ejectors which replaced dedicated ".45 Win Mag only" extractor and ejector of the basic weapon. Later on, LAR manufacturing also introduced two slightly enlarged version of the Grizzly, known as Mark IV and Mark V. Mark IV pistols were chambered for popular .44 Magnum revolver round; Mark V were chambered for very powerful .50AE ammunition, in an obvious attempt to catch up with competitors such as IMI / Magnum Research Desert Eagle or AMT Automag. However, for various reasons manufacture of Grizzly pistols has ceased by the turn of 21st century, and today these pistols are no longer made. However, L.A.R. Manufacturing Inc is still in business and still offers spare parts and service for Grizzly Win Mag pistols.
Grizzly pistols were known for good accuracy, high quality and fierce recoil, especially in Mark V .50AE version; these pistols required replacement of return springs quite often, about every 1000 rounds or so (in more common calibers return springs can serve ten or twenty times more with not a single problem). Pistols were available with different barrel lengths (6 1/2 inch barrel being the standard), with optional muzzle brakes and/or compensators.

And I have all of the conversion kits 45ACP, 357Rem Mag, 10mmACP.

I wouldn't be shooting most of these that often, because of ammo costs.  Just a nice collection to have - more of an investment than anything else.

I've never had that problem but mine has a way of working the safety screw out when firing even after being loctited.  It's pretty annoying and I agree with firing before buying.  I admit, however, it's definitely an attention getter and is really fun to shoot.

Tiger hunting in India in the days of the British Raj was dangerous for both the tiger and the hunter. It was not unknown for the tiger to try to climb up the elephant to get at the hunters in the howdah, and at such close range, a rifle was not an effective weapon. For such 'last ditch' defense, a large-bore, double barrelled pistol was used, and these came to be known as "Howdah Pistols". The one shown here is a fine example made by Purdey in the first half of the 19th century. Like most howdah pistols, it is a large smoothbore, in this case, 0.662"(16 ga) with 7 1/2" barrels. Since they were meant for 'snatch & shoot' action, it has only a rudimentary bead front sight and no rear sight, but it is relatively light (2 pounds 6 ounces), and the balance is absolutely superb.

Except at the lowest charge, shooting the pistol can only be described as 'brutal' - my knuckles were bruised, and my wrists felt like they were hit with a bat. I could not get a consistent velocity reading with the chronograph at 60gr, but I had enough data to estimate the ball energy with a 70gr charge. The accuracy of the pistol was at best modest, particularly as its light weight and heavy ball made it hard to control, and the off-center kick moved the impact point a good eight inches to the side which was fired.. At an elephant-to-ground distance of about 20 feet, I could generally get a 6 inch group - not great precision, but on the other hand, a tiger is a pretty large animal - especially at close range..

I've handled one at the range. At first I had no idea what it was, my friend came up and was like "check out this semi-revolver" and I was thinking he didn't know what he was talking about. Then I examined it and was like "holy shit, he wasn't kidding"

Ammo is easy to find, the grip size is managable (smaller than D. Eagle), controls are the same as any 1911, and most parts are interchangeable with any 1911.  Fairly rare in 44.  Magazines are expensive and only hold six rounds though.

Remington XP-100.  Mine is chambered in 7mm BR, but I've shot one in .308, and they go bigger.

This one isn't mine, it's just a pic I found on the web.  They weigh about 6 lbs, plus or minus, depending on the stock and the barrel profile.  The 7BR has about twice the muzzle energy of a .44 Magnum.  Not at all unpleasant to shoot, accurate out past 200 yards.
