Sitting here pondering my possible transition to the USA.  Having been back on AD for almost 2 years now and another year to go, I look back on why I chose the Navy.

I'm flying out of Andrews right now, medivac missions.  Did the tourist thing and visited Annapolis, saw JPJ's crypt and the Navy Memorial, and lone Sailor statue in DC.  So I'm thinking of all the influences that brought me to this.  Those that jump out.

Dad was a Naval Aircrewman.

Loved airplanes as a kid and was shown by dad that the USN fields the best pilots and aircrews in the world.

Loved ships and big guns.

I'm a romantic and traditionalist, both sewn into the very fabric of the USN.

The USN is one ass kicking force.

Pride and heritage.

The only service mandated by writ of the US Constitution!

My mother dreamed one day I'd be a flyer like my dad.

Uniforms are probably the most widely recognized in the world.

They made the movie about Top Gun, not red Flag or any other.

Cher killed me on the Missouri in that video!

Just a few anyway..

And walking around the USNA, DC and seeing all the things I have seen, I don't know that I can leave..  I mean we have the greatest Sailor and one of the greatest Americans in a crypt, memorialized!  Where  else can you find that grasp on heritage, tradition and pride?

Who knows, maybe I really am supposed to stay and carry on these like the chief says..

...don't swap. It's a case of the grass is always greener on the other side. I often thought about getting out while I was in the Marines, but not about switching to another service. All the things you don't like?--you'll find them in the Army too...

Actually, DECADES before Top Gun there was a Red Flag movie, as well as Strategic Air Command.  The Air Force isn't totally ignored by Hollywood.

However, Flight of the Intruder is better than all of them ("Fighter pilots make movies, bomber pilots make HISTORY!")

Being raised in Pensacola, I am quite a fan of Naval Aviation.  The only thing cooler than seeing the Blue Angels over Pensacola Beach was the first time I saw them when I was on the faculty at USNA.

Thank you for your service,

Shooter

Romance is part of the Navy? Oh you sailors...

I can't imagine serving in any other service.

Know what? I don't want to imagine serving in any other service.

Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile... can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, 'I served in the United States Navy.'

For once a Democrat was right.
