Welcome to Canton province!

The eatin' rats are supposed to be a special, extra-tasty variety.  Or at least that's what I was told, probably just to make me feel better :)

Cooked well done and handled safely, they're probably safe for human consumption.  sort of like a miniature squirrel.

I  think I'll pass though  Chicken feet and duck-blood jello are far out enough for me.

I heard a story about a "Giant Chicken Leg" for sale at a Chinese market once. It still had dog hair on parts of it.

It may have been fictional but it was definitely possible.

It actually doesn't look all that bad once it's prepared.

This is probably no more "nasty" than us eating squirrel. It's just that we have always eaten squirrel (well, us country fuckers anyway who live where we can hunt them), thus, we are conditioned from childhood to accept it. If we had been served rats by our parents from childhood, we'd probably view that as just as normal.

Really, when you get right down to it, eating any filthy fucking animal is "nasty" in a sense, if you really think about it. Have any of you been on farms and see some of the stuff chickens will eat when the opportunity is presented? Hehe. I rest my case. Every form of meat we eat that I can think of (though there is probably an exception somewhere), regardless of what it is, all has a digestive system of some sort and produces shit. That's nasty in it's most simple terms. But if properly cleaned and prepared, most of it becomes safe for consumption.

While I am not quite ready to see cooked rat on my plate, I concede that in reality, it's probably no worse than lots of other meat we eat daily in which we never give a thought. But just think, the next time you have a steak or a pork chop.....not long ago, the animal in which that piece of meat came from was standing in a field somewhere taking a shit and being a filthy animal. It will make the rat look a bit less disgusting in comparison. Haha.

I think you are a very worldly and intelligent individual.

Youre ideas are right on.  You have to figure a lot of stuff we eat is nasty to them.  Its cultural.  Also you have a country with BILLIONs of people. Protein is hard to come by cheap.  Beef, chicken and pork are outragously priced.

In most countries if you dont move fast enough you get eaten.  Thats the way of things.

We are rich and prosperous and have the luxury of only having to eat certain animals.

Others dont have that choice.  POWs were more then happy to have rat on a stick.  Its all relative.  Well if you get hungry enough your relative maybe the meal as well.

We are a rich country.
Here a poor person has to eat cheap (fatty and tough) beef steak.
In other poor countries poor person gets no food and may die of starvation.
If you go hungry for couple weeks I bet that cheap beef steak will start to look good to you too.

say all you want about rat but you prolly eat chicken and there are few things grosser than chickens. they raise em in enclosed boxes, they feed em hormones. the damn things have growthis all over their bodies. they shit all over each other and live in their own crap. they peck each other to death. then they load millions on some flatbed and haul their asses to some gross packing plant where subhumans stand knee deep in chicken guts, crap, and blood and whack at the stupid critters with straight razors to cut off their heads and hose em down and box em up to be shipped to some large food chain or a fast-fry place run by more subhumans that dont cook the things enough and you gobble em up....

rats.. at least are mammals. chicken aint nothing but a new model lizard or snake....

Most of us have never been hungry.  Many of their people have and when you have been staving you never forget that.  My grandmother lived though a Japanese occupation and was always short on food.  Anything that crawled or ran and could be caught was eaten.   If she offered you food it was the highest honor you could expect.  She thought a lot of you if she shared her food with you.

OK, the weirdest thing I've had in China is a shot of vodka and snake blood...this absolutely takes the cake.

Actually, I've never even heard of rats being eaten in China even though I go back every couple years...must be rural cuisine

I can tell some of you have never seen the back kitchen of some chinese restaurants here in the good ol' US.  One of my tenants is a chinese rest....after seeing his kitchen, I'll never eat that stuff

I like shrimp, lobster, and crab, but if you die in the ocean guess what will be the first critters eating on your ass. Underwater bugs, really.

And catfish eat nasty shit. They are like the rats of fresh water. I eat those too.

Someone already mentioned how nasty chickens are.

Ever eat a hot dog? They put everything but the squeal in those nasty things.

I don't know.  Looks rather tastey to me.  I'd try some.  Like someone else said, chickens are pretty gross if you really get down into the details of how they're grown.

I prefer the 3 squeak meal:

Little bowl of new-born mice, still hairless, pink and blind.
Pick one up with the chop sticks, it sqeaks once.
Dip it into the hot chili oil, it sqeaks again.
Pop it into your mouth and chew, squeaks one last time.

I've eaten the 'mystery meat' at chinese restaurants many times, most of the time I couldn't tell you what species it was. It could have been rat, cat, dog, monkey, beef, chicken or pork, either way it tasted pretty damn good and I didn't get sick so I guess that is all that matters....

I can see that Field rats are good eatin as they probably have the same diet as squirrels.

I don't know but that looks delicous to me and agree with Mr. Bohr, some of you need to get out more.

Kinda on topic:  saw a porcupine the other day. anyone know how to prepare these?  is there a fast way to take off all the quills?  would imagine it would take a long time with one by one with pliers.
