Live DVD or HD install.

To change root it is usually root   su (duh) then passwd in a shell.

Sounds like he has some problem with his video and it kicked him to a console and now X won't start manually

I think its the live dvd. I have the old version and the new one. when I put them in it doesn't go to a install screen like the centos did.
yes there was a error.I have a ati graphics card.Is that the problem. Man this stuff is way over my head. I just wanted to have a safe OS to use with my windows computer. I guess I could just use the knoppix live disk. The only problem is when i download the plugins and of course they are gone when I turn my computer off.

ATI doesn't play well with many Linux distros.

You may want to try Ubuntu or Fedora Core 5 both have IIRC ATI drivers.

Linux is gonna take a little longer.

I'd help ya on the X server, but I'm more of a Fedora guy, and they dont't use xfree86.

i don't think its done loading, or your install is fubared!!

it should boot up to a login screen then you type your username then your password.

admin login is root(as posted already),  but you should rarely use that.

centos is basically fedora.  just a different name

And BTW, YOU have no business trying to spell "original".

+1 for installing Ubuntu or Kubuntu.

In the past, I've attempted to install about six different distros and I've ALWAYS given up because they've been a PITA to get working. Now, I have a kickass fileserver running a RAID array and it took me probably six hours to get setup.

Based on the information you've given me so far, your install was set to runlevel 3 at default, gave you the login prompt, you logged in as root. I fail to see the problem. Elaborate?

Linux's problem is not the l337 h4xx0rz.

Linux's problem is that it took me more than six hours to install the most retardedly simple distro. I can have a Windows box running with the same setup (RAID, Azureus, Firefox, AV, file-sharing/samba, firewall) in less than an hour. The minute you make some computer n00b type 'apt-get install foobar,'  their head will explode.

The easiest distro has to get much, much easier to appeal to grandma.

I don't know anything about CentOS, but the # you see means you have logged in successfully as `root', the superuser, and that is your prompt.

If you're just starting out on Linux, I'd either suggest using Ubuntu (as others here have already suggested) or Suse 10.

Suse is incredibly easy to install, if you can install windows you can install Suse.

Ubuntu has better package management.  (Gotta love Debian-based distros... apt-get kicks ass).  Ubuntu is also resonably easy to install, and their documentation and support forums are top-shelf.

just my $.02

I don't think I am self-appointed "ELITE".

Sorry for the typo grammar nazi.

Anyway back to point here. If you are going to jump in to something like Linux or BSD you need to do some research. If someone dosn't even know how to login to their Linux box they need to either A.) Re-Install Windows or B.) Go to the bookstore or local library.

Despite what anyone thinks, or thinks Linux will achieve it will never be the end all be all Desktop solution. Windows and OSX are your desktop solutions. Linux is a server OS. You will never see a Linux distro that comes out that will be a stable end all be all desktop solution.
