All my life I've used what my dad always used -- Hoppe's No. 9 and straight up light machine oil. Then I discovered RemOil, and while it is certainly useful, it does have its limitations. "ARFCOM seems to like BreakFree. I think I'll try that," I thought to myself. MY GOD THAT STUFF STINKS!!! Gun cleaning products are supposed to smell good, like No. 9 and RemOil. BF literally made me gag! Do all CLP type products stink that badly??? |
Yes.. and dont use it in your barrel!! |
Try using Butch's Bore Shine sometime. You don't know what stinky is, sonny! |
Call me strange, but I actually like the smell of BreakFree. Why shouldn't you use it in your barrel? I do all the time.
|
It contains teflon. it can change your point of impact.. I have seen move up to 5 inches.. AKA stringing |
Does that mean I can shoot through body armor if I use it? Use it all the time, sight in your rifle with 9 rounds every session. How hard is it? |
No kidding? I've never noticed that. ![]() I clean mine with Hoppes, then I run a CLP soaked patch down the bore when I'm all done. If it's been a while since I last did it, I'll just shoot it as is. If the CLP soaked patch was run through the bore recently, I'll run some dry patches down the bore before I take it out to the range. In any case, I've never noticed my POI changing. There's no way in hell I'm stupid enough to argue with you over it (I admire your knowledge level), but it's wierd that I've never noticed this. ![]() Anyway, what do you suggest? |
Hmmm...RemOil has teflon in it too, and I've used it extensively in my bores.... Oh well. And Da_Bunny: How can you not think No.9 smells good? It's the greatest smell ever! THAT is the smell of victory. |
Well, this is just the first time that I used a product that specifically said "CLP" on it -- No.9 and RemOil doesn't. I assumed (incorrectly, apparently) that "CLP" was more of a formula than a descriptive term (despite knowing what it stands for). |
LOL... you ready...... Marvels mystery oil or light gun oil.. Then I swab out with alcohol soaked patches before I shoot.. What it is is the teflon it slick. With each shot after the first the teflon is slowly wiped out of the bore. your velocity changes with each shot. And your point of impact can change, due to the irratic velocity. |
Facinating! Do you use Hoppes like I do to clean it first? |
#9 nitro and copper or sweets 7.62 or butches boreshine or the ultrasonic cleaner.. All depends on how dirty.. Then I have some powdered sapphire cleaner that I use on the really bad ones.. |
![]() I've been using Breakfree for 20+ years now. I've NEVER seen a change in the point of impact because I used Breakfree in my bore instead of another product (like LSA or SLIP2000). Add to the fact Breakfree hasn't used Teflon in what a decade now? |
Ooooh...Marvel Mystery Oil...now that stuff smells good. And yeah, the 3-in-1 or just regular light gun oil is some really good, useful stuff. |
In my day we only had [insert insane old people rant product here] and we LIKED IT.
|
No teflon huh?? Look here... Link to brownells Per brownells site.. A super cleaner, lubricant, preservative containing Teflon and other specialized chemicals. ETA: sent off a short e-mail to Break Free to find out.. |

Good god Hoppes #9 stinks to high hell. It's a hell of a strong solvent type smell. Breakfree CLP smells fine/pleasant to me. What's wrong with running it down your bore/barrel though? I do it to help clean out copper solvent (Hoppes) from my barrel after I've let it sit and do its thing.Edit... 5 inch change in impact due to CLP in the barrel? I find that VERY hard to believe due to a few molecules of teflon. Doesn't the military use CLP exclusively to clean their weapons? I know you're a gunsmith, but damn, that just doesn't make sense. Breakfree has excellent anti corrosion properties as well as good overall cleaning and lubricity. It's good enough for the military and it's good enough for me. |
