I have a small home network (6 computers) feeding off of a 2wire
Homeportal residential gateway, they all share the cable modem line with no
problems.  I want to integrate an old IBM box into this to just run as
a SETI@HOME machine (It is a 133mhz clunnker).

There are no USB ports on the aptiva and I am not inclined on adding
one, but it does have an ehternet card and two serial ports and a
parallel port.

Would I just stick another ethernet card into the server machine and
connect the two that way?  If so, what would I need to do?  Is there
another option?

Thanks in advance.

how do you have the other 6 computers connected?  (ethernet, home PNA, etc)  If they're ethernet, just shove a hub onto the 2wire, and connect all of them to that hub.

I have a cable modem as well. You can use a Linksys 4 port router like me, or go to http://www.coyotelinux.com/ and try the software they have and connect it to a hub. I have used the coyote software and it works. It actually works as a firewall.

Home PNA, but the two computers (the server and the old machine) are sitting on the same desk.  The old computer has an ethernet card in it.  Any help?

2 nics in one machine shouldn't be a problem, I've done it in a win98se computer. You would have to use a "crossover" ethernet cable and not a regular one for teh direct connection though. I'm not sure exactly how to set up the software for the setup you'd end up with though, although it should work

I've read your question three times and still don't get it.

Are you trying to use the "old IBM" into a gateway to the Internet? Or are you trying to intergrate this with your network?

Two NICs can be installed in a computer but if you're going to want to relay packets between them I don't think Win95/98 will do it but know that NT will.

What I think you're trying to do is connect your cable modem with it's Ethernet cable to a small network hub. From the hub you'll be able to connect all your computers with each able to see the Interent if you install TCP/IP on them.

I have a similar setup but only allow one computer to have the network protocol (language)TCP/IP installed - one firewall, spamkiller, and virus engine to maintain. The others talk to the primary machine using a Novell protocol IPX/SPX which isn't routable to or from the Internet - those machines are invisible to the Internet.

Sounds to me like you could just hook up the old IBM (with the ethernet in it) to the ethernet port of the 2wire gateway.  If you have something on that port already, put a hub on it.  Shouldn't be too hard. (assuming the 2wire gateway is close to the server and old machine)

One thing I don't get, is the "server" deal.  You running a server/client network?
