I don't understand the point of the SS109 deep penetrater. A standard 5.56 will defeat up to a level IIIA vests. The SS109 and standard ball will not defeat a level III vest so I don't get why you would spend the extra money. I have tried the SS109 and found that once the target becomes to hard the penetrater tends to bounce off while the ball ammo will show a pronounced crater. If someone can tell me why it is worth the extra money, I am curious.

It has a slightly greater maximum effective range due to it's being 62 grains versus 55, and is designed to penetrate a helmet at a given distance, not a Class III vest.  Other than that, and being able to get it in battle packs, I don't see much difference.

If memory serves, the SS109 was an attempt to increase the effective range of the FN Minimi.  That it did, but at close ranges, the M193 is just as good (if not better, and much cheaper).

Don’t know that there is a dramatic difference between M193 and SS109.

However, there is a dramatic difference between a level IIIA and a III vest.  To oversimplify things a bit, a IIIA is designed to stop a handgun round, the III is designed to stop a rifle round.  Big difference.
