Remember when TV stations used to play the national anthem or another patriotic song at the late night signoff with images of America Our local TV station here used to have aerial photographs of the area along with this song.  I leave you with this tonight.

God Bless the U.S.A.

By Lee Greenwood

If tomorrow all the things were gone I’d worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,

From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there’s pride in every American heart,
and it’s time to stand and say:

I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming!
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

I was born in '75 and I remember.   We still had a real country then.  Now we have friggin' infomercials instead of a graceful signoff.

Ah yes...Late movie came on at 0000hours, usually some old black and white horror movie, then at 0200, the sign off. I remember it vividly, since it wasn't all that long ago.

We got 3 channels, channels 4,6, and 27. Channels 4 and 6 were the same programming, but one based in Tallahasee and the other based in Dothan.  Many nights as a kid I turned on my little 3 inch B&W TV set when I should have been fast asleep and watched those old, horrible movies. To this day I can remember watching one where a giant gila monster ravaged a town, and at the end was destroyed by a kid with a hot rod car packed full of nitroglycerin.

Yes I remember GREAT STUFF - I would get up at 5:30 - 6AM to watch the one or two servings of the MODERN FARMER and I lived in BROOKLYN NY.

I fucking LOVED it.

Well LANCEMAN, when I saw the topic I thought, "this guy's going on 'hiatus' or something."

They did away with the signoff when I was a little kid I think, in the 90's.

The local station (one of them, at least - I think it's KSFY?) still has signoff, at least on some nights. 1 or 2am? I saw it the other night. It's changed over the years, but right now they play taps (IIRC) and have video of the local artillary NG team (I think) firing a salute. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.
