I have a Gmini402 MP3/media player, and I want to know what the easiest way to convert a DVD to an AVI is. If it can add Divx or Xvid encoding, all the better, but I can do that myself if necessary.. I just want to be able to watch my DVD's in the car on an upcoming trip. All help appreciated!

Uh, umm, I think it's a felony to even attempt it much less actually do it - even if it's for your own personal use.  I believe this has been upheld in court, too.

One example is the DVD XCopy case.  They had THE BEST DVD ripping software on the market.  They were taken to court AND LOST.  Sadly, DVD Xcopy is no more.

Making copies for personal use is not a crime.  It is just the same as Tivo'ing a show for later, or using a VCR to make a personal copy of a movie for watching later.  To heck with the RIAA.

Actually, making the back up isnt the crime, its breaking the encryption that IS a crime... But they can still kiss my ass....

Agreed, the crime was the breaking or attempted breaking of the encryption.  Of course, if the DVD isn't encrypted, ...

Check out  Mobile DVD and AnyDvD here slysoft.com.
Very useful programs. Although for more serious Divx conversions I use GK(the full version not Auto)

I have a copy of DVD xCopy and bought it just before 321Studios got chased out of business. Their software sucked too. Try anyDVD for a decoder + Nero 7, beats the heck out of DVD xCopy.

This information is for legal backup purposes only and IS NOT A VIOLATION OF CoC

I find there is a fine line betwen circumvention of enryption and flat out ignoring encyption.
AnyDvD jsut ignores it does not circumvent.

DvD Decypter is also a nice program, but it can't be found any more. Distrubtion of that program is illegal because the company that now owns it won't distrubute it.

dvd decrypter.

but i must warn you possession of dvd decrypter is not a crime, nor is possession of a dvd a crime but possession of both at the same time constitutes an intent to illegally copy a copyrighted property and can result in a 250,000 fine and 50 years in prison.

I like AnyDVD. It has worked good in conjunction with InterVideo for me.

Another good side use for AnyDVD is to activate it while watching a DVD movie. It allows you to skip past all of the warnings and move right to the DVD menu as it disables the chapter skipping blocks as well as region coding.

DVD Decrypter is still out there and fairly easy to find.

Macrovision may have bought the rights to it, but they ain't gonna be able to put the Genie back in the bottle.

I use a 3 step program
1. DVD Shrink
2. DVD Decrypter
3. Auto Gordian Knot.
works great.  all 250 movies of mine are now on 2 external HD's

I have a CD with all the programs on it and will be happy to make copies if you'd like.

Actually there is a "New"-er DVD protection system out there recently. I have People I know have run into it recently, and DVD decrypter WILL NOT get through it!

However...there are "Other" programs that will..........

The .VOB files in the Video-TS folder are what you want.
You can (or should be able to) watch them directly on your laptop or you can find software to convert them to .avi, .mpeg, etc.
