I'm thinking about getting a laptop for travel, mostly for internet access , some work, and some entertainment functions. Say I downloaded a movie (Blackhawk Down) to my comps hard drive, how much memory would a movie take up?

Memory and Hard Drive Space are not the same.

SO what are you asking?

I think you mean Hard Drive Space.

You can get Divx versions of movies (Mpeg4) and they usually are about 700ish megs.  A DVD movie on the other hand will need about 5gigs to be safe.

Won't your new laptop have a DVD drive?

Most laptops today will have at least 20GB hard drives.  With just an OS and a few applications, you could come out with about 15GB free space.

RAM would really be irrelevant if you wanted to download a movie and watch it later, however, I'd recommend 512MB RAM minimum.  That should work fine for some web browsing and video watching.

Imagine your hard drive space as your garage.  The bigger the garage, the more boxes of stuff you can store there for later use.   Your RAM is your desk.  The more RAM you have, the more work  you can have on it before running out of space.

Correct. Sorry about my poor phrasing. I'm just trying to keep the laptop as mobile as possible. No dvd drive, this lil' bugger is what I'm thinking of:

specs:
VAIO® UX Series

Intel® Core™ Solo Processor U1400 (1.20GHz).
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
4.5" Wide SVGA LCD, Touch Screen 1
Integrated WLAN, WWAN, and Bluetooth® technology
512MB3 RAM and 30GB4 (5400 rpm) hard drive

Looks like you could store 4-5 full length movies on it before running out of space. Or if you used AutoGk to process/shrink the movies, you could get alot more movies on it. Free program, available here: www.autogk.me.uk/index.php
