Saturday I took my grand daugther shooting . She is 11 years old and this is the first time she shot an AR15. I had a pink rifle A1 style just for her. She did good with the safety aspect of shooting the rifle. Had a little problem with using the iron sights shooting at 50 yards. Well she shot my ar with an eoteck on it. Started to hit the ballons at 50 yards with ease. I set up ballon targets at 100 yards and she was hitting them with no problem. I lost my ar for the rest of the day. Now should I make her go back to the iron sights or let her enjoy herself abn add an extra tasco pro red dot to her pink ar? She also told me she was bragging at school how she went shooting with an AR15 and she has one that is pink. One of the boys at school told her she is lying so she wants me to email her pics of her rifle. I told her no that maybe she should keep her mouth quiet about her pink ar. But she is so pump up about it. I guess this may be problem #2. I can see now: Show and Tell at school with her doing a field strip of her Pink AR.

I will take a pic of her at the range shootingb her ar. The range is run by the police and the guy that was in charge was so happy to see her shooting. He wants her to sign up for the hunters safety course which I will do. Next range trip will also include some pistol shooting. I think I have a shooting buddy now. She is hooked.

PassGass,
I would say coach her on the iron sights, with breaks in between with glass to keep her interest.

maybe if you flip the sight to the long distance one i will be easier.  (smaller hole)  this helped for a friend of mine.  just my .02

you should definitely get her a pic or something to put that kid in his place

What I going to do is ask her to draw me a pic of what she sees when looking thru the iron sights. Then I am going to show her a pic of what the sight pic should look like. I think that it will be a loooong time before I show her how to bump fire. I think that I am more pumped up about it than her.

Go ahead... you still live in the south,  I took pics of my son shooting an AR and my HBAR 700 rem and also sig229 put them all on a poster board....  all the kids thought he was hot shit.  No words from the school at all !

My kids talk about their range trips at school.  Hell, my son (high school) even took in a Fajen thumbhole silhouette stock to shop class to finish.

Teacher didn't have any problem with it and thought it was cool.  (this is San Diego North County too)

This is a picture I posted awhile back and I lost it when my old computer at home crashed. I just happen to have a copy on my laptop at work. This will be emailed to her tonight. I still want to get a pic oh her shooting it, and a pic of her loading it.I hope this will make that little boy that called her a liar to eat crow.

Matching mags! That's a winner.

Glad your grand kid is one of the EBR, err, EPR crowd now.

Good on you I just picked up a drop block ithica 49 lever rifle in 22mag for my boy... when he is old enough. He is 3 right now. And send the pics the best thing in the world will be for her to start a debate about how much fun it is to shoot.

Ithica saddle gun model 49 in 22 mag. I just got a minty one in 22 mag. I was stunned when I got it from the pawnshop for 100$ OTD. Oho yes. My three yesr old now has two guns waiting. His Heritage arms revolver in 22lr, 22mag, and his Ithica 49 in 22 mag

These are single shot, drop breech, lever drops the breech block.

How do you get the pink color on your AR?  I would like to do a build like that for my daughter.

Also, for the Ithaca guy, how does yours shoot?  My first gun was one of those in .22 LR.  Shot wonderfully, but it wouldn't extract even after replacing the extractor.  I had to use a rocket launch rod to ram out the empty...  very annoying...

Damn, she looks cool as hell! Trigger discipline, the"I could kill you in 2 seconds "look, nice stance. She looks kind of serious about that weapon,so don't be surprised when she wants all the pink shit taken off and replaced with black .

My 9 y/o only runs rifles with glass on them.
At this age I'm more concerned with teaching proper form and safety over using irons. Once shes comfortable with a rifle and once shes familiar and most of all once shes big enough to properly hold the rifle then we'll work on using irons.

Remember, first and foremost shooting should be FUN.

hey Passgas55, would a telestock be a little easier for her to get up on those irons?  I think you can get em in pink.

My 10 year old son first hijacked my M4gery and Eotech 552 back when he was 8 years old. He thinks the Eotech is like playing Nintendo, and he is VERY good with Nintendo if you understand.

It's kind of hard to make them go back to the old iron sights on a bolt action single-shot when they've had a taste of a 30 round mag and the gas pedal.

Edited to add: This year he got to shoot a WWII, 9mm, MP34 F/A at the range. The owner let him f/a dump a 32 round magazine. I was so proud.

Good job passgas55!!!  I love to read stories like this.

I started my 10 yo daughter off with a .22 last year, but I think for her 11th B-day in a few months she'll be getting an AR15.

She has already shot mine w/a .22 conv. kit and silencer, and loved it!

Cavalry Arms made the stock but I can not remember who I bought it from. Cavalry Arms web site does not show the the pinks, blues, reds, yellows stocks anymore but I guess you can give them a call and they should be able to tell you who does.

you can also get any stockset you want and then just spray on some duracoat for that "perfect pink"

Is there ever a bad story about taking kids shooting around here?

Seriously though, always good to hear about kids getting hooked on shooting...............

Some people! Don't you know how dangerous it is to expose kids to BRD! Symptoms may include: Lifelong interest in firearms, a disire to learn more, and increased quality time with family.

When I took my guns to school, I was a senior in High School.  I gave a presentation on Rifle, Shotgun, and Pistol safety.  I had gotten permission from the principal to bring them to his office until it was time for my class, then I would retrieve them, make the presentation and return them to the principal's office until it was time to go home that day.  Pretty simple and I got an A for the project.

pg55,

Great story.

Now, go change out her A1 upper with a flat top and MagPul stock.  She's too small to stretch her arm from the trigger/grip and place that stock into her shoulder and then align her head with irons that are over a foot away from her nose.

Dave S

BTW, you are a wonderful grandfather.

I go to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s range. When my grand daugther was at the range she noticed 2 guys that were dressed in red doing work.  She thought it was odd that the 2 guys were dressed the same wearing red jumpsuits. I had to explain to her those guys were trusties. Then she asked the police officer running the range if she can see his pistol he was carrying. She told him that she just wanted him to unholster it to look but not to touch.. He did pull his pistol out removed the mag, showed her the bullets and how the pistol operated. It was a great outing for her. I did not see any dogs out there but they do take care of a cat who lives at the range office.

She's a keeper!!  And the rifles not bad either.

I have to concure with everone that says get a shorter stock.  My wife, who is 5'9" has trouble with my AR with an A2 stock.

As always it's great to see kids get involved with shooting.  Think of how envious the little boy will be once she shows him the picture of her pink AR.
