I don't care how kooky the idea, I need some itch relief.

I have an 18" long scar on my leg where they opened me up and then stapled me back together after "rebuilding" (yeah, right, that worked well) my lower right leg.  It extends from the point where my foot and ankle connect to half way up my shin, and a few inches above my ankle is a 2" perfectly round scar where the bone protruded.

It is itching like CRAZY tonight, and I need to get some sleep!  I have tried lotion and just about everything else, but it keeps drying out every few days and then the scar itches like sin itself.  Of course, it hurts like sin to scratch it, as the infection in the marrow has the whole area so tender I can hardly touch it without wincing.  So I can't scratch and I can't leave it alone.

Someone here MUST have a remedy to alleviate the itching.  Please!  I know it is a scar and will itch at times, but this is just driving me CRAZY tonight!  Any ideas to alleviate it just enough so I can get some sleep?

Spray some FOX OC spray in your face, that will take your mind off of the itching.

Nope.  Tried it.  No help.  It itches deep inside and outside of the skin all at the same time.

hydrocotizone cream (sp?).  Although it only contains 1% active ingredient OTC...  It might help on the outside.

I feel your tich.  Try ice.  Heat might work if it's OK with the doc.  After my second knee surgery to clean out a staph-a infection, I had an itch that was far worse than the pain.  Swear-to-god, bullet to the head stuff.  If it fails, late-night TV and CALL THE DOC in the morning.  Could be trouble.
ETA:  It's a self-perpetuating problem.  The more you scratch the more irritated it will get, and the more it will itch.  A real test of willpower, but leave it alone and see what happens.
ETA again:  No shit, happened to me.  A very soft paint brush will let you, uh, pleasure yourself without too much irritation.  Call in sick, fire up the TV.  'Bout all you can do.

Vitamin E?  May not help the itching so much, but could keep it from drying out.
Yeah, yeah, the jelly....

Benadryl...antihistamine to minimize itching.

Or like others have said, vitamin E or antihistamine...

Those just may work.

Belt sander and a towel?  I know that itch, only thing that will stop it is threating it. or rubbing the heck out of it.

How about an ointment like theragesic which I believe is an aspirin cream?

A judicial mis-application of oral anesthetic?

Vibrator?

Talk to your doctor about a TENS unit.

Thanks folks, but creams won't do it.  The infection is in the marrow of the bone, so the itch is both deep AND topical.  The creams help the outside itch, but way deep down I just want to take a knife and scrape the bone to make it stop.

I'll try the ice and see can I get some sleep.  And yes, I have seen a doctor.  Nothing the VA can do with the infection until they amputate.

I was hoping for some "home" remedies that people know for a fact will get rid of this damned itching.  It's driving me flipping NUTS!

I already said one... A HOT ass shower, and every second you get used to it, make it hotter.

Have you tried capsaicin creme?  It's got the same ingredients as pepper spray but is made to relieve pain and itching.  Good stuff! Read the details at the link. Available at your local grocery or drug store.

Will definately be doing that tomorrow!  I didn't ignore the advice, believe me.  But showers are not possible at this time of night as John (roomy) has to get ready for work so I leave him all the hot water.

But it does nothing for this incessent itching.  I can deal with the pain, but the itching is going to drive me to hurt something.

BTW, doesn't sound like something for anyone who bites their nails, LOL.
