As most of you know I am a fan of rare and obscure films, especially those with a sexual theme as it tends to make them even more rare, with pre Hayes Code films being among my favorites.

Well I finally rediscovered Nazi Sexploitation films which seem to be a novelty of the early 1970s. They are a strange mix of slasher film, prison chick film and softcore porn with swastikas for good measure.

Now I normally avoid this kind of genre.

I have pretty much zero interest in slasher films, the exception being the first Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Steet and other similar classics. But normally I view the slasher genre (whose devotees know every "Faces of Death" title verbatim) with more or less the same disdain I hold for WWF fans.

I can sorta see the attraction of "prison chick" films with their reliable nudity and assured lesbian themes, not to mention the whole notion of captive hot chicks who must submit to your demands, but quite honestly there is less variety here than in slasher films. Once you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all and most film enthusiasts would be hard pressed to name a "prison chick" classic. Chained Heat (1983) would be my favorite but that is mostly because I have a thing for Linda Blair.

And of course soft core porn has the obvious attraction for most (naked hot chicks) and it is that element which is the ultimate appeal of Nazi sexploitation films.

But even with the "soft core" nudity these films don't have wide appeal because....well because basically they suck. As "films" go these are pretty fucking terrible and they are made worse by the fact that most were Italian productions (the only people who can make films as crappy as the French). And if you are looking for a film you can watch with your wife or friends without being embarassed by how shitty they are then these are DEFINITELY not for you. Keep in mind I have a high tolerance for B grade cheese. I love cheesy 50s sci fi and I can watch Shaw Brothers Kung Fu films for hours. Those genres are "Gone With The Wind" and "Citizen Kane" compared to Nazi Sexploitation.

But at the same time, they certainly have more appeal than say an Ed Woods film.

Now obviously the other attraction of this genre is pure shock value. They were made a mere 30 years after the end of WWII and many of those wounds were still open and painful, holocaust survivors were mostly still around. This is the same kind of shock value as early "drive in" slasher films which were kick started by "Blood Feast" and seemed to reach a zenith with "Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

One of the first ones (at least that I'm aware of) was Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS (1975) which most agree is the best (I don't). It is certainly the most famous. This was a non stop shockfest of massive cleavage, nudity, sex, torture and gore. Even 30 years later, if you aren't ready for this one, it will take you by surprise. It's on my list of "watchable" films from this genre for basically two reasons: 1. It has Uschi Digard in it (briefly) and a host of other top heavy (pre silicone) gorgeous stars (and I don't mean Dyanne Thorne who seems a bit old) and 2. It was filmed on the set of "Hogan's Heroes."

The other "well known" one is definitely The Night Porter (1974). Now this one almost "doesn't count." First off it is a real film (a Criterion collection release even), second it lacks the blatant nudity, gore, torture and shock.  It is like comparing "Psycho" to "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", while technically the same genre they are worlds apart. However the "theme" of this film will actually be more offensive to some than the rest of the genre. It is basically a story of a woman who was a concentration camp inmate who had a sexual relationship with an SS doctor and encounters him after the war and rekindles their affair. It is "watchable" but ultimately boring (to me anyway) as the various S&M themes are pretty lame by todays standards. But this was still a year before "The Story of O" and probably an eye opener for it's day.

Now onto my favorite which is easily Salon Kitty (1976). First it had a budget of more than $25.00 and it actually had a [gasp] story. This is about the only one I can watch more than once a year. An interesting tale of nazi's taking over a bordello and stocking it with devoted national socialists (hot BDM chicks woo) who will service high ranking officials while those in charge will determine their loyalty and get valuable blackmail material. Sadly this could have been a REAL "film" but they let Tinto Brass do it and he just isn't capable of making a movie without a lot of weird and stupid crap in it to ultimately fuck it up (as evidenced by his masterpeice "Caligula.") Stupid crap aside the main reason to watch Salon Kitty is Teresa Ann Savoy who is actually better in this film (and hotter) than in Caligula.

And then of course there are the rest (mostly unwatchable and mostly from Italy) and some of the titles include Fräuleins in Uniform, SS Girls, Last Orgy of the Third Reich, Nazi Love Camp 27, Deported Women of the SS, SS Experiment Camp, SS Hell Camp, Hell Train For Hitler, Red Nights of the Gestapo, Fräulein Devil and Stalag 69. Most are very out of print, not available on DVD and only need to be watched once. Definitely rental material here and will only be bought by those guys who already own Faces of Death 1-5 on laserdisc.

If you are curious enough to take a look, start with the Ilsa series (like everyone else), there are four of them but only the first three are on DVD. You really aren't missing much with the fourth. And if you can find it take a look at "Salon Kitty" which IS on DVD but kinda hard to find.

But don't say I didn't warn you.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go watch The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Twins of Evil (1971) to get my head in the right place because I've been watching a bunch of Nazi Sexploitation all day.

I would prefer to be the one that is doing the tying, and the one who was able to lie.

I don't want to have a chance at Wonder Woman and say something true, but REALLY stupid. Like shave that cat, bitch!

Well, the Italians have made some good films. One of my favorite films is Cinema Paradisio. But that might just be because I like film, and the story is touching.

Steyr, you've got excellent taste in film.

I concur about the slasher movies, but "I Spit On Your Grave" is my favorite...

Although I'm still not sure if that counts as a slasher...

I saw "last orgy of the third reich". I was a teenager, and we thought it was  a typical porn. That  was one weird movie. I remember the scene where the jewish girls were lined up, and the ss let a german shepherd sniff them, the one on the rag was breakfast. Freaky sick shit. Stopped watching right there.

Check out "man behind the sun" sometimes called "men behind the sun" for some Japanese WW2 atrocity fun. This film is very sickening and based in reality. Some of the effects are almost TOO realistic. I believe they used the real body of a dead child in one scene.
Rough stuff but better than an Ilsa movie.

PS some of the Nazi explotation films were secretly shot on the set of Hogans Heroes.

Wasn't Bob Crane (Col. Hogan) into BDSM and "other" fetish activity? I wonder if he was involved (behind the scenes) in some of these films. Just a speculation.

Wow. Excellent and interesting writeup, Steyr. I'm a film student (or at least, I was, until I got tired of all the libtardedness), and love bad movies. For reasons obvious, I never heard about Nazi Sexploitation films in class...I may just have to, eh...check it out.

My area of interest is bad zombie movies. Worst zombie movies ever, in no particular order, according to me: Zombi (or Zombi 2, same thing), The Dead Next Door, and Zombie Lake (which had Nazi zombies in it). Don't try watching these unless you really, really like bad zombie movies. I enjoyed them thouroughly.

ETA: BTW, Zombie/Zombi 2 was Italian.
