What do you call it.

Ive always been raised with the menatlity that a gun is just a firearm until it is used to harm another person.  It kind of blows my mind to see how many people openly refer to all guns as "weapons"

any thoughts on this??

it is a weapon is it not?  a "gun" is a smoothbore. firearm can be used interchangeably with weapon

Refering to it as weapon only helps to reinforce its very nature...and to treat it with respect.

But I still have a bunch of guns...!

It ain't a weapon unless it is used as one.

I usually call it a firearm, rifle, pistol or whatever it is. Sometimes I call it a "gun"  but not often. Guns are naval or field artillery.

usually i try to refer to it by what type it is, ie "rifle" "shotgun" "pistol".  if i have to be more general, i try to use "firearm" but sometimes catch myself using "gun", even though "firearm" is the more accurate term.

Talk about jumping the gun.

A rose is a rose by any other name... You rather call it a toy? Language effects how people treat things and a rifle/shotgun etc. is something I'd rather have a person respect. Especially if they are handling one around me.

I typically refer to them as weapons out of habit(damn arrrrrmy training....) but not all firearms are designed to "kill effectively as possible"

I agree and would probably change 'kill' to 'incapacitate' but meh. My mother started the whole weapon thing when I was very young...

So, what kind of work do you do with your "tool"?

Do you keep it in a "tool box" or a "tool shed"?

Do you say "I'm going to the range with my tool"?

When I was in the Army, calling an M-14 or a 1911 a “gun” would promptly result in you on the ground doing pushups.  For something to be a “gun’ in their eyes, it needed wheels, tracks, or an aircraft attached to it.

OTOH, when I went through NRA firearm instructor school, they got really upset over the term “weapon”.  After all, a pitchfork could be a “weapon”.

If you’re looking to keep everyone happy, “firearm” seems the best way to go.

"Firearm", unless the device (whatever it may be) is employed as a weapon then "weapon".

I very rarely use "gun" as it's become a "curse word" of sorts with how the grabbers have imposed their twisting of language and meaning upon it.

A former Army Ranger told me that guns are mounted on ships. An individual's  long gun or handgun is a firearm or weapon. Kind of a matter of semantics I guess.

Actually, I kinda agree with him.

I don't own anything that is only suited to "sporting purposes".  Well, except my Dad's old lever-action Marlin .22 but that's more just there for nostalgic purposes.  But against rodents it could definitely be an effective weapon.

My guns are weapons. Their sole purpose is for killing. I'm not ashamed of that in any way. I only shoot targets for two reasons. Because it's fun and to stay proficient in case I'm going  to shoot someone or something.

Depends a lot on the audience. I may use words I ordinarily know to be wrong if it seems applicable.

However...

Firearm: Man-portable projectile weapon involving propellant gasses ignited by spark or flame.
Gun: Generally a form of artillery piece, usually with a low trajectory, distinguishing it from howitzers.
Weapon: Anything used to attack another. Could be a club, could be a nuclear bomb.
Otherwise, Pistol, Sidearm, Rifle, Cannon, etc, as appropriate.

Ditto for the most part. But I also use the term "weapon," as that's what I learned in basic/AIT. I only punch holes in paper, but all the boomsticks/gats I own were originally designed to punch holes in people.

I other news, it is called a weapon, a gun is an artillery piece or a heavy caliber "gun" mounted on a track or on an aircraft. If you ever called an M16, a "gun". you'd be pushing 'till the Drill Sgt got tired of watching you.
