Federal authorities indentifying themselves only as investigators with the Department of Health and Human Services silmutaneously raided two homes in a small town near here yesterday. The homes belonged to a middle age woman and her daughter who were taken into custody by the investiagtors. The raid involved around 20 federal agents in four cars and eight vans, which were loaded up with dozens of boxes and computers taken from the homes. Local authorities were not informed as to the nature of the investigation.

Any guesses as to what this could have been?

That was my first guess.  But isn't that the FBI's jurisdiction?  I can't think of what laws Health and Human Services enforces.

They would be needed to remove any children and to identify if any children were abused.

Nope. Wrong states, and if it had something to do with child abuse, my wife would have known about the investigation.

That's not within the jurisdiction of federal HHS.

Exactly, that would be under the Kentucky Department of Health and Family Services for which, my wife works.

Not if it was in conjuction with a federal investigation in which they were trying to maintain secrecy.  They wouldn't tell the local-yokels anything.

Like I said, mission creep.

Wrong, they do deal with child abuse. Check here I would imagine if it was a federal investigation that the kids would go with a federal agency. Could be anything, terrorism, kiddie porn, federal drug charges, it's anyone's guess.

It would be possible, but unlikely. My wife's agency is always called to pick up kids when the parents are taken by the feds for drugs, interstate crimes, or counterfeiting.

if I answered the door at all. I'd likely pretend to not be home while getting a rifle loaded up in case it was burglers faking being a fed agency to con you into opening the door for an easy home invasion

There are GS-1811 Criminal Investigators that work for the Department of Health and Human Services (Office of the Inspector General.)  They have badges, guns and arrest authority (they generally investigate fraud cases.)  If they knocked and announced that they had a warrant and you told them to fuck off, the next sound you would hear is your front door being kicked in.

I'll pay you $25 for 3 documented examples of federal HHS workers taking kids from their homes and placing them in temporary, foster, or permanent care under federal court supervision due to unsatisfactory living conditions, outside federal enclaves. That's a state function. Baby-snatching agencies are largely funded and pimped by the federal government, but the police power authority to act in loco parentis is a state power. When morbidly obese affirmative-action hires with bogus degrees from historically corrupt colleges and universities or skinny moist-eyed white chicks from Berkeley snatch working people's kids, they're on the state payroll, whether the parents are being arrested for child abuse, garden-variety theft, or plotting against the federal government.

ETA: The underlying investigation is 90% certain welfare fraud of some sort.

Yeah, it's terrible when the "baby snatchers" take away the kids of wonderful working class folks. Usually all they did wrong was put out cigarettes on the baby's face, or have anal sex with their three year old son. Sometimes they are just too busy hitting the pipe to notice that the kids have been crawling around on the floor eating dog shit for a week.

Obviously, you need to spend more time going along behind your local team of child welfare workers/Maury Povich stagehands. For the most part, they are arrogant fools, and they can generally be counted on to worsen any situation in which they involve themselves. They are customarily stupid, vindictive, and wrong.

I live with a social worker. My wife worked two jobs to put herself through college so she can do a selfless, demanding, emotionally draining job that doesn't pay very much and few people appreciate. She is very intelligent, highly motivated, and talented and could be successful in any number of fields. She chose social work to try help those who can't help themselves.

The examples I gave above are only three of the 26 cases she has dealt with in the last week. She could tell you stories for days that would turn your stomach. I don't need ANYONE telling me to be more informed on the subject.

It's a damn shame we are required to help these people remove children sometimes. We are required to help them if they ask, but it's often bullshit, and there's nothing we can do about it.

I have seen children removed from homes because of pure and utter bullshit, and I have paged the on-call person who would refuse to come out in the worst instances (like the 2year old and the 5 year old left at home alone while mom went out to the club). The system is hit-and-miss at best, and usually the "hits" are in the wrong damn places.
