I have always liked this company, and have purchased alot of ammunition from them. However, I went to their site today, and ammunition is now restricted. You are not even allowed to look at their selection or prices. You have to call a 1-800 number.

They are folding to the left. I have read others posts that relate their unwillingness to sell hi-caps, laser sights, and other products to states where their are no restrictions on owning them.

We need to stand up and tell them that if they give up on us, we will give up on them......

If I find a .com's system to be a pain in the ass, I won't buy
from them.

I can get hi-caps, etc from anywhere.

I honestly just don't see why anyone would get worked
up about this kinda thing.

They're lazy or not too swift if they won't deal with the differences.

I don't know why I found that so funny.

What are you talking about? I'm viewing ammo right now? Prices are right there.

I just checked this and it showed me selections and prices. Maybe there was a temporary problem?

I say we boycott Southrnshooter.
Link Posted: 3/3/2006 5:57:24 AM EDT
Their new policy could be the result of pricing and inventory issues. How many times have I heard about people ordering ammo from them and not getting it for six weeks. The supply of cheap foreign ammo coming into this country is shakey at best right now. Prices and supply can jump wildley.

Whatch u talking about? I just now went to the site on old fashioned dialup from the backwards state of Orygun and looked at pages of ammo, prices, and even went through to the shopping cart.

Only restriction I saw was you had to be 21 to buy handgun ammo.

Link Posted: 3/3/2006 5:59:50 AM EDT
I had the same problem last time I placed an order. The site prompted me to refer to one of their printed catalogs if I wanted to browse ammo.

Looks good to me. I've ordered thousands upon thousands of rounds from them and will continue to do so (unless they actually do something bad against shooters)

On first glance the poster appears to be right. I don't see a link to firearms ammunition on the homepage and when you do a search for ammo, you get the following message:

View your search results for ammo below or click on a category to narrow your results:

Restricted Product.
Please call to request a catalog or for more information about this or other restricted products.

Can someone point me to where the ammo actually is?? (I haven't ordered in a while...)

When I click on "shooting, knives, and ammo" I end up on a page that lists paintball, optics, and cutlery, but no ammo....

I don't think a boycott is necessary. I just think their web guys might need to stop drinking....

It seems that Link 1 takes you to shop.sportsmansguide.com, whereas the second takes you to www.sportsmansguide.com, and that seems to make a difference in what you can actually see on the website.

Again,

Anybody considered that they are filtering by IP addresses? If your IP is close enough to a ban area like DC you have to call in maybe?

Here's a good one.

I ordered 1000 rounds of Wolf 62gr .223 from Sportsmans Guide earlier this week for delivery to Annapolis, MD.

Here's SGs email reply:

Subject: RE: Restricted Notice

I received the email, below, following an order for .223 ammunition. I'm
writing to request some further info on the restriction to delivery to my
billing zip code referred to in your email. I have purchased ammo by mail for 20 years
and online for a least the past 3 years and have never run into this restriction. If possible,
please include a citation to applicable US Code or Maryland statute.

Thanks for your assistance,

XXX

SG responded:

Dear XXX,

Thank you for the E-mail.

We have placed certain restrictions, on certain items listed in our catalog and our web site.
Due to the various state, county and municipal laws that exist, we are not always able to comply with each individual guideline. Not all of the restrictions are based on laws on the books, but could be a company decision based on certain concerns. Things such as whether the state law suits pending involving gun owners, recent court decisions that may effect businesses like ours. Finally it may be that the states laws are so vague that they could be interpreted unfavorably in the event a court action was ever involved, and finally as a public held company, we are obligated to safeguard our stockholder's investments.

I have spoke with our products department and they said that the major influence in our decision is that it is located too close the the District of Columbia. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

If you have any other questions please contact us.

Enjoy the Outdoors,

www.sportsmansguide.com works fine.

shop.sportsmansguide.com reports that ammo is a restricted product.

Interesting. Well, there's only one way to solve this Scooby Doo mystery - I'll be back in a minute.

I boycott them, but it's because every time I ordered from them (non-ammo), something wasn't as advertised, and I ended up eating return shipping on their error. After 5-6 times, I got the impression that they were either really incompetent, or crooked.

Same here. Maybe Google won't let them use the ammo link in a sponsored link?
Link Posted: 3/3/2006 7:24:04 AM EDT
OK, I just got off the phone. There's a good explanation for the disparity in search results between {shop,www}.sportsmansguide.com. They were quite helpful.

Google does not allow it's advertisers to sell ammo. If you search for "sportsman's guide" in Google, and click on the sponsored link, you will be taken to shop.sportsmansguide.com. Ammo cannot be browsed or searched for on this page. Technically, "shop" is a different host than "www" within the domain, so they are different sites altogether, as far as Google policy is concerned.

Everything works fine from www.sportsmansguide.com, as this site cannot be arrived at by following the link of a paid advertisement. As far as Google policy is concerned, this is functionaly identical to cutekittens.geocities.com being allowed to advertise pet products, while at the same time prohibiting more-thrusts-per-squeeze.geocities.com from selling M193.

The billing zip code restricions remain however, and are still of some concern - as evidenced by the email conversation posted above.

I hope that clears things up.
