does the monitor make a popping noise when this happens or does it appear to be a loss of signal?

if it's popping, it's either deguazing the tube <normal especially during dry winter days on large tubes> or the tube has a problem.

if it's loss of signal it's most likely the monitor or cable is bad/ loose connection. check you display cable.

either way odds are it's not your video card. they usually either send signal or don't.

Check your power supply or video card.

If you have another monitor I would plug it in to see if the problem duplicates. Chances are you do not and I have had the same problem you are describing several times at work and it usually turns out to be the video card. You can get then from 35 dollars on up to several hundred tiger direct or new egg .com are both good websites that are trustworthy, also make sure you know which type to get AGP, PCI, or PCI express.

Actually, it is more likely that the problem is the power supply inside the monitor, not the computer's power supply or video card.  The best way to verify this is to use another monitor for a few days.

Last week my monitor died, the symptoms were just like yours. The flyback transformer in the monitor went bad.
