I am pretty sure this is a dupe so sorry in advance.

Is there a data base somewhere that I can check a guns serial number  to see if a gun is stolen?  I know of one that is a really good deal but am a little wary of the seller.

You can call your local police station and ask them to run the serial number for you to see if it is in NCIC.

- Not without an LE source.  Just call the department, tell them wgat you need and see if they will run it.  I dont see why they wouldnt.

The cops will most likely check it for you, but expect a visit from them.  They are going to want to check you out also.  BTDT, not that I really minded, just surprised.

If the piece IS hot, you are really going to get a visit.

"Who has the piece?"

'Fork it over."

I have my local small town PD # ( non 911 ) on my cell phone.

I have called in approx 15 firearms I have purchased in the past couple years. Takes them approx 30 seconds to check the serial # ...... no big deal and never a hassle.

All have came back fine.

ALWAYS check BEFORE buying the gun.

In my town I tried to have one checked a few years ago--a widow who had a revolver her son bought from a shifty friend she didn't approve of.  The son had drowned decades earlier and the husband took possession.  When he died she wanted me to "get rid of it."  I offered her money, she refused, but I didn't want it in my possession (straight arrow, have FFL, etc.) if it was stolen.  I tried to have it checked and the popo wanted it first, then said they would return it if it was "clean."  I told them I couldn't do that as it wasn't in my possession (yet).  He then got rather pushy demanding to know who had it, where it was, etc.  As the lady was a client I couldn't tell him, so it put me in a bit of a spot.  I finally flat refused and excused myself.  A few months later the officer was arrested for gang affiliation, drug offenses and various malfeasance.  Obviously that's no reflection on the entire department, but sheesh.  I ended up later passing it on to a buddy who didn't care about its history.
