| What do the numbers on the binoculars mean? For example 8X21. Doesn't that mean 8X magnificiation and 21mm lens? If so, why does it seem that every pair of binocs I look through seem like the are only 2 or 3 times magnification? Something's wrong and I don't think it's my eyes! |

Well it looks like it's only two or three times closer than. My point is (and I guess I'll put it in the form of a question then) do manufacturers fudge the numbers or outright lie? I mean, are there any industry standards to which they must adhere with their claims of magnification, etc? |

What brand of Binoc are they? Almost all do NOT fudge the number. Trust me, if they say 8x, they really are 8x - it just may not seem that way at first to you. Usually the larger the objective lens the more light they let it, but there comes a point of diminishing returns. I have found in my tests and usage that the optimal binoc is 8x32 - very good overall magnification and light gathering under optimal conditions, plus they weigh a lot less than 10x42, etc. |
